you need to tell me how much fluid you have added and I think you need to add more till it reads right on the stick, after you started it the torque converter had to fill up now not enough fluid for the pump to pick up and keep pressure. Do you hear a whining noise?

Transmission pan gasket

Not too hard at all, even easier if you have it up on a lift. But if I remember right the pan is easy to get to without having to remove anything else. It is a good idea to go ahead and replace the filter while you are there. Make sure you get the rubber seal out of the valve body when you remove the old filter.

2002 mercury sable wont go into gear. shifter moves, linkage moves. transmission wont engage and or get out of park

ok sounds like the transmission might be your problem
first you would need to change the transmission filer by pulling the transmission plate and draining and replace filter and fluids new fluids prefferably. if that doesnt fix it. you could have a sensor or computer part out only real way to know is to take to shop to get looked at. hope this helps good luck

1999 mercury sable 24v engine oil ends up in transmission. where to start

Seal between the Engine and Transmission is leaking. The oil is only getting into the bell housing area. If you are checking your transmission oil and it is black or brown you need a major transmission repair and fluid and filter change.

I plan on changing my transmission fluid & wanted to find a diagram showing where the tranmission oil filler bolt is located.

Hi:
Most vehicles do not have a transmission drain plug. You must remove the bottom pan from your transmission to drain the fluid and change the filter. Remember to replace the pan gasket when you do this, if a new gasket doesn't come with your new filter.

Slow in reverse, not much power

you will have to get the transmission flushed with new gasket and filter...if that doesnt work you will have to get it overhauled.

Transmission

It would appear that the transmission is worn out! The transmission fluid is supposed to be red in color with no bad odor about it. When it turns brown & has a burnt smell to it -it means the fluid was low at some point and it got real hot (with an fluid & filter change it could be saved).
When it turns black it means that the fluid now is usually past the saving point as is contaminated with lots of metal filings in it. If you change the fluid & the filter at this point you've got a 50 /50 shot at maybe getting it functioning again -at least for a short while.
I personally would try the fluid & filter change if just to get it running again (although it may have some issues) although the real answer is to start looking for a new vehicle (due to it's age) or have the transmission rebuilt if the car has no other major problems and you think it would be worth it! BTW a rebuilt transmission goes for about $1200 which is probably more than the car is worth.
