I have a 98 Saturn SL1 from time to time it would not start, it wouldn't even try. I knew the battery was good. It turned out to be the cranshaft position sensor.

If you have good battery voltage at this time, and when you banged on the starter and then the car cranked over, it would appear you have a defective starter. i would imagine if you replaced it in july of last year that it could still be under some sort of warranty, so i would look into that. either way, it sounds as if you need a new starter.

If the problem occurs after the car has been driven long enough to reach normal operating temperature, the problem is the starter. If the 'no crank' occurs cold, retest the battery.

Do you see a light on the dash that says SECURITY or ANTITHEFT? Disconnecting your battery can trigger your antitheft system.

Here is a link about the security.

MY SATURN 2002 SL1 WILL NOT START. MY BATTERY IS FINE BECAUSE ALL LIGHTS AND RADIO WORKS BUT WHEN I TRY TO START IT, IT MAKES A CLICKING SOUND.

A quick check, is turn your headlights on, try to start, if lights dim almost to off, bad battery, if they don't dim, it's a bad starter assembly.

98 saturn sl1 starter clicking when trying to start.

hi...
did you check the voltage of the battery.?

because the power required for lights and radio are very less. but for starting the engine is more becaause ot needs to turn the engine. please check the voltage it should be 12-14 volts.
if it doesnt have this much power charge the battery and check start it wil start.

SL1 won't start, just single click, electronics work

Try charging the battery or jumping the car, your alternator could be shot and not charging the battery.
