With the engine off see if the shift between 1st to 2nd feel,s free if not it could be the cable check the clutch is disengageing all the way it should go into reverse without crunching, other then that it could be a synchro ring worn check that the gearbox has the right oil in it.
if the clutch really is working, (lever at bell moves 3/4") by fine, my guess, is you can take off from dead stop in2nd, right>? then its a bad shifter. tip. or linkage (end tranny extension housing) or transmission actual core.(shift rails, or forks) or worse. you do know ,that you can disconnect the linkage and test tranny. by hand, key off leakage off shift to neutral (read the FSM or alldata.com) for how. under M/T sections. then key on start engine, clutch depressed, the lift pedel car moves its stuck in 2nd, of not bad linkage. can do all gears that way, use 2 people and do not stand infront of car doing test. or put the front wheels up on stands. but do not get near them. while engine is running. btw some shifters have plastic parts that go bad in the shifter tip.
or , jack up car in front, can you now shift car in to neutral or any gear? linkage tests. remove shifter housing and below see the shifter, H pattern sifter box mechanism. see that. you can shift that by hand with any small wrench or large screwdriver, if the works the parts on the end of the shifter handle main shaft tip are bad.
does the clutch push normally or is the linkage broken not disengaging clutch, and then does shifter move around or locked and wont move, loose linkage in shifter or gears are jammed inside transmission and something went, if shifter wont move at all then trans is jammed inside and needs repair.
Maybe the shifter cable. I would look under the car on the drivers side of the transmission, with the wheels blocked, have someone operator the gear shifter and see if it is moving the shift lever on the transmission.
This vehicle has a pair of shift cables which attatches to the shifter and runs to the transmission shift housing. To diagnose, removal of the center console is in order so you can inspect and verify the shifter/cable connections and movement, then verify the cables move the linkages properly at the transmission . These cables are a fairly common failed part and sold as the set, these are a dealer item and no aftermarket cables are available .
What you can try is to remove the shift cables from the transmission side. then move the shifter and see if everything is free if it's still sticks then the cables are going to be replaced. if everything is moving with the cable off. then you need to remove the shift tower on the tranny (where the shift cable is I belive it's 5 bolts) remove the tower and you will see the shift pin. Inside the tower there is a cotter pin that breaks and that will cause you to have one gear and unable to selected another gear. If you are not mech inclined I would no attemped the shift tower repaire, the cables do it will save you money. The shift tower has bushings that can fall into the tranny.
