Left work last night approx 130am, my car was still warm.Everything seemed fine with starting the car and pulling out of my employers driveway. As soon as I hit the road I smelled smoke---very potent familiar smell ( first time with this car) smelled like something electrical. Checked under the hood--no obvious signs of any charred material, some smoke however dispersed evenly with no obvious signs of where the "fire" might be. Any one have suggestions? Any typical problems with this year/make of vehicle? Am I safe to drive? Thanks all for you're help
SOURCE: 2 recurring problems: #1 car
lets start with the check engine light, the check engine light is part of the on-board computer system it is on because one of the many sensors on the car is out of range, any time the check engine light comes on the on-board computer system records a trouble code in its memory, if you take the car to autozone or many other auto parts chain stores they will retreve the codes for free, after you get the codes get back with me and i will look the code up and try to lead you down the path to geting this problem repaired, but with out the code any thing i have you try would be just a shot in the dark.
now the oil smell, I am going to assume this car has the 3.4L V6 there are two main oil leaks we see on these engines, the leak is most likely high up on the engine , i say this because it must be dripping on the eaxust manafod, the leak must be small and in a place that allowes the oil to puddel then when the car goes around a corrner the oil will spill out of the puddle and onto the manafold, the most coomon leak on these engines is teh lower intake manafold, it leaks at the rear lip seal and the oil will puddel on top of the transmission bell housing, so take a look at the back of the engine were the engine and transmission bolt togather, look for oil standing in the resess on to of the bell housing.
now for the stering, the pop or bang in the front end is very troubling. i think you need to have the rack and pinnion unit checked, that would be the only thing i can think of that might cause the stering to just all a sudden get out of line, and if it is the rack it could get dangerous in a hurry, dont delay have this checked TODAY, have them remove the dust boots on the ends of the rack and if there is any fluid at all in the boots replace the rack, make sure you tell the person checking the front end about what the car has done, so they can be looking for a linkage problem with the rack and stering collum.
good luck
let me know if there us any thing else you need.

THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO IS TAKE IT TO A SHOP SO THEY CAN SCAN IT FOR TROUBLE CODES. THAT WILL PUT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
