The last time I experienced this the gearbox governor gear (which are usually made of plastic had lost its drive teeth. Did you notice if the speedo still worked.

2000 Lincoln Continental transmission shift.

Question edited for clarity. I think you left the 'f' out of 'shift' and the site software redacted it. :>D

For this fault, you need a Transmission specialist. It is likely to be the shift solenoids but could also be an ECM / TCM issue.

The link will find you someone.

What does it mean when my 96 Lincoln Continental won't shift from 2nd to 3rd gear and is it safe to drive it like that?

It is safe to drive but the car is running in too low a gear at high speed and this will result in greater engine wear and lower gas mileage.

You have a transmission problem.

Transmission/Gear Issues I have a 01 Lincoln Continental... I have about 172k miles on it and having issues with it going into 3rd gear. Goes through 1st and 2nd fine but as it goes in to third it feels...

You have too much fluid in the transmission. Park on level ground. After a 15 min drive. Leave engine running. Set parking brake. Transmssion in neutral. Check tranny fluid. A cup or more over will cause this. Better to have less than too much. Drain at least a full 1 leter bottle. Go for drive check it again. As above.

1989 lincoln continental signature bangs into 1st gear upon slowing to stop what could be causing this condition

First have the transmission fluid changed and a new filter installed, if that fails to cure the issue time for an overhaul.

Trans shifting hard between 1st & 2nd gear

Could be internal wear but it is worth changing the transmission oil as it can help. Also check the gear linkage which might need adjusting.

My 97 lincoln Continental go's forward just fine. I can feel the transmission shift into reverse but will not move. If I give it the gas the engine speed stops at about 1500 rpm

The TCM or transmission control module may be bad or a stuck trans. shift soleniod. It may be worth it just to take it to a certified transmission shop to have them run a diagnostic check to retrieve the TCM's trouble codes then go from there.

1998 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL TRANSAXLE NOISE

Is it possible that the sound is happening every time you hit 14 mph after a fresh start? The TC does a ABS check 14 mph that runs the pump for a second.
