How many quarts of automatic transmission fluid does a 1999 ford e-250 need when replacing the transmission filter?

I put 5 quarts, but it still doesn't go into reverse.

  • Anonymous Jul 15, 2012

The dipstick shows that it's full....however, the manual that came with the van says it requires 15.9 quarts. WTH. I don't want to overfill. How many quarts do I put? Now, it will go into gears, but it won't move. It just revs like it's in neutral. Please help.

  • Anonymous Jul 15, 2012

I added two more quarts. Now, it goes into reverse, but not drive. Does anyone have any contacts on OAHU you can refer me to that rebuilds transmissions?

The four speed automatic shows a total fill (that is all the fluid it can hold) is 5.7 Quarts. So if you just dropped the pan and relplaced the filter, you shouldnt need more than 4 quarts and likely you would have a little extra with that.

If the fluid was brown or gray when you changed it, I am afraid you are a little too late and have already sustained internal trans damage.

First remove the transmission oil pan remove the bolts that hold it on, next remove the filter and remove the gasket. Use 3M weather stripping glue to glue new gasket to the pan, (N0t the Transmission) remove the screw holding the filter on and remove it, if it’s plugged you will get fluid on you so have a piece of cardboard under you to catch as much as you can. Replace filter be sure to install new o ring and put a slight amount of fluid on the o ring to get it to slide back in place and seal replace bolt holding the screen back on. Reinstall pan bolts tightening from left to right just get the bolts snug then tork them from left to right and front to rear working from the center going out to the ends. Once it's tight add 5 quarts of transmission fluid to the filler tube, now disconnect the transmission cooler line from the radiator and put a big pan under the connections, start the car and et it run for a couple of minutes shut off and check oil level add more fluid and do the same, if the fluid won't come out wile running put brake on and put in gear, it will pump out a quart every thirty seconds so run for anther minute and a half, once the fluid is read and the transmission is low enough to add more then retook line to radiator, add one quart of Lucas trans mission oil conditioner then top off with fluid to the full make with car running and level in park. Top off to full make. You should notice a big difference if smooth shifting and better performance and fuel mileage. Use Dexron III transmission fluid. Please rate, as this is all I ask for free information. Buying a book would cost you $24.00 so when you rate that’s your thanks to me for my time. If you need more assistance post here and I will help you more if I can.

How do you change transmission fluid on a 2007 explorer with no dipstick

WRONG! At least CHANGE the FLTER and 6.75 quarts of MERCON V transmission fluid, not anything less!! $ 5.50/quart at Advance Auto. Get a Haynes manual or similar - it's NOT clear, what to do either! AT LEAST do what's being described for this "life-time sealed A05 Automatic transmission! Now if you have the BMW car A06 speed (so-called) transmission - YOU"VE got a REAL PROBLEM + use MERCON SP fluid ($ 10 per quart).

NOTE car MUST be SAFELY, up at least 18" from the ground and LEVEL. Parking Brake ON and BLOCK front and rear of ALL tires! To CHECK fluid level Trans must be at least 80 degrees F and ENGINE RUNNING = DANGEROUS !

The problem is you need a screw in fitting to properly fill and check the A05 speed Automatic transmission ADAPTER (up to 100 dealer) 9 at Amazon worked for me. A small pump with hose (similar, but larger than what hand soap uses) (from $ 6 Amazon to $ 32 - $ +9 at the car stores). A new filter ($ 18 to $ 100). WARNING some filters say they come with a Gasket, the don't! The gasket is special metal and silicone should be reusable IF you don't tear or over torque (tighten). REMOVE Drain plug, the trans pan 15 small bolts, take off pan CLEAN WELL, remove magnet CLEAN, remove two small bolts on filter, LET DRAIN 20 plus minutes. Wipe with clean, lint free cloth ALL of the bottom of trans - then LIGHTLY clean the gasket surface. bolt up the new filter. Lightly install all bolts. Then LIGHTLY with a short 1/4" ratchet tighten all of them.- NOT TOO TIGHT!

Remove the Torx screw/plug from the middle of the Drain Plug - screw in the Adapter, put pump hose onto it - pump 5 quarts into pan. Start engine, pump the next 1.75 quarts into transmission. Using another CLEAN transmission bottle, remove the hose AT the top of the pump - put into the bottle, when about a 1/4 th of a quart drain out on its own - remove the Fill adapter - reinstall the Torx Plug. WIPE all off evidence of oil - drive! Check for leaks the next day!

While doing this, why not protect your investment AND SAVE MONEY? Change the Oil, Oil Filter, Fuel Filter? Use Purolator or Ford Brand Filters ONLY! Use 15-40 Chevron Delo Diesel Grade Oil or Shell Rotundunda . In 500 miles or less I would suggest replacing oil and filter - NEVER MIX OILS. (or use WD40 (designed for arthritis - it's fish oil with water IN it! Destroys engines! Factual Opinions' count, feelings base on LIES, don't!
