2003 kia optima 6 cylinder hard to start after fillups only
I have a 6 cylinder kia optima 2003,recall was never done, but i dont think it is related as i have driven so far 160,000 trouble free miles, anyway when i stop the car to fill up at the gas station,(vehicle is off)when i go to start the car after the fillup is complete i experience a very tough start, engine cranks fine but it is almost like there is no gas,to start it i have to push down on the gas peddle and rev the engine for several moments before the engine will stay running,no check engine lights have appeared, and this only happens at fillup,i thought i would outsmart the car by leaving it running, while filling up,but alas, the car was smarter than i,as soon as i started filling the car up while it was running,it started to rough idle and then quit running,so i went back in after the fillup and same thing,if i hold the gas pedal down a bit until the engine starts and then rev it a bit, till it stays running on its own,the car runs perfectly all day long each and every day of the week, except for when it is time to gas it up again, this fillup situation is getting me worried any ideas?thanks

Live in Alaska, and I do not shut the vehicle off when its below 0 out, and it will die when I am refueling.... Evap system... but which part.98 sephia... I have the same issue...I took my car in, and they said there is a open valve cap that is stuck open, and as gas flows through on fill up...it floods the filter which creates the car to have to have a rough start. To fix it would cost $250. But they said it would not harm anything. It only happens after each fill up. This post is kinda old..so I wonder if you ever found the solution, if u haven't traded it in already.I have the same issue...I took my car in, and they said there is a open valve cap that is stuck open, and as gas flows through on fill up...it floods the filter which creates the car to have to have a rough start. Re: 2003 kia optima 6 cylinder hard to start after...
Its surprising how Kia has no idea what the problem is since alot of people seem to having the same problem.. 2003 and 2004 Kia Optima have this same issue from what I have gathered from the forums. Mine is a 2004 and after 130000 it developed this problem..and OMG its time to put gas in it again :( headed to Tires Plus today to see what they find. giving them list of things to check that I have found in the fourms.. let ya know how it goes..

Replace you fuel system evaporative filter (charcoal canister), the gas fumes evaporated from the fuel tank are pooling in the filter causing very rich mixture, thus rough idle.
My 2004 Kia Optima has the same problem - I will have a non-Kia mechanic check out the evap filter/canister since the Kia dealership kept the car for two weeks, took apart much of the fueling system (supposedly), and still have no idea what the problem is. They also claimed that they have never heard of this before! My 2004 Kia Optima has the same problem - I will have a non-Kia mechanic check out the evap filter/canister since the Kia dealership kept the car for two weeks, took apart much of the fueling system (supposedly), and still have no idea what the problem is. sounds like the stepping motor which controls engine idle speed. does it idle ok ?. If it does check the usual things like the air filter, fuel filter, have you ever changed the spark plugs ? Get a full service done.
it is a recall from kia they will replace something in your steering wheel call the kia motors i had mine done for free because its a recall thats why your light is on a pin went nad they need to replace it call them
IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE THE TIMING BELT I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IF YOU HAVE 60K ON THE VEHICLE IF YOU HAVE A 4 CYLINDER THEY HAVE A CYLINDER BALANCER BELT AND THEY COME APART AND GET LODGED AGAINST THE CRANK SENSOR IF THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU DO THE CRANK SENSOR WITH THE CYLINDER BALANCER BELT AND THE TIMING BELT AND TENSIONER HAVE SEEN THIS MANY TIMES THIS USALLY HAPPENS BEFORE THE BELT GOES OR BEFORE THE VEHICLE WILL NOT AT ALL
Kia:Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 1 Transition I just had this happen on mine. I will reset code and wait. If it comes on and it was not a fluke I will replace the O2 sensor on Bank 2 which I think is the rearward bank on our 2.x 6 cylinder Optima 2002 SEV6.
Turn ignition off. Disconnect knock sensor 3 - pin harness connector. Locate knock sensor, on cyli nder block. On Optima 2.7L engine, sensors are located on both sides of cylinder block. . Remove knock sensor from cylinder block. To install, reverse rem oval procedure.
I have a 4 cylinder 2003 Optima and I'm having all kinds of trouble with it. I got it last year and it had 76000 miles on it. When I bought it, the driver's side rear window didn't work, and the locks were iffy on unlocking with the button. NOW, it has 103000 miles and I need new axles, already had to get a new timing belt, the driver's door lock is broken (can't unlock from the inside OR outside), and the gas tank is screwed up. Don't think I'll ever buy a Kia again.
Sorry to Hear. This problem goes back to a 2001 Optima binding intermittantly over the years. I bought a new lock mechanism and installed it my self. Took me 2.5 hrs. It is like all metal rods HUB, located near key way cylinder inside door. I had to hack saw off one of the old rods just to get old HUB off. Fortunately, the new HUB came with the exact rod.
