I had a similar problem with my 95 Dodge with a cummins in it. Took
forever to figure it out and so every morning, or if it sat 6-8 hours,
would have to operate the primer pump under the hood to get it started
for the day. Long story short. There is a fuel supply line to your
engine and all diesels have a fuel return to to the fuel tank. After
replaciing a section of fuel supply line with no results, discovered
there has been a history of undetectable micro perferations in the
steel fuel return line. The defective section of return line is
normally the section in front of the firewall. I replaced this section
with rubber hose. Its been several years since I did this repair... and
if I recall correctly, hacksaw removed the firewall section of steel
return tubing and hose clamped a section of rubber fuel line to replace
the steel line I removed. I've never had a problem with engine starts
since doing this repair. Hope this helps you out.

have you checked for any air locks in the fuel lines these can be caused when new parts are installed or fuel tank is ran dry. i had this problem on my golf and originally thought the cause was dirty fuel. i bought a bleeder pump that attached to the filter and bled the air out. priming if you like.
Did you make sure you install it in the right direction of fuel flow, make sure no lines are kinked. it takes a few cranks sometimes to get the fuel back up to the motor.
Have you checked or changed the fuel filter? Will it start and idle after it stalls? I have seen dirty filters or filters that have colapsed cause a similar condition before.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THE LIFT PUMP OR POSSABLE FUEL RESTRICTION CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER ALSO CHANGE THE AIR FILTER IF THAT DOSENT FIX IT YOU WILL NEED TO CHECK THE FUEL PRESSURE OUT OF THE LIFT PUMP BEFORE YOU WASTE THE INJECTION PUMP
do you still have the old style lift pump. located on the fuel filter housing or has it already been updated to in tank style. sounds like that to me. i've done a ton of them. chrysler has a whole conversion kit for this mod
the fuel pump is going out. Replace your fuel pump.
