Maybe started with warning light for sports mode coming on after noisy reverse engagement. This cleared. Next day, very juddery starting off in each gear. Progressively jerky and clunky engagement in reverse over 5 times, then very noisy short reverse, followed by total gear failure, forwards and back
Take it in for a check of the computer module that controls transmission and for the engine ECM or PCM. Sounds like it could be a computer malfunction.

Symptoms of a P0651 code may include: Failure of the transmission to shift between sport and economy modes Transmission shifting malfunctions Delayed (or no) transmission engagement Failure of the transmission to switch between all-wheel and two-wheel drive modes Failure of the transfer case to shift from low to high gear Lack of front differential engagement Lack of front hub engagement Erratic or inoperative speedometer/odometer
if manual ( not specified) reverse gear is a spur cut gear and will be noisy when engaged
gets worse if the gear has been engaged inadvertently or slashed by mistake as small pieces of the teeth get chipped off and the result is a noisy reverse operation
nothing to worry about til it starts to clunk as you are going in reverse
may need drive shaft universal joint bearings.... if clunking is that bad it needs to be replace soon.... can be extremely dangerous if it comes apart.
transmission may need an update-new data from factory gear--a diagnostic scan will show issue-vehicle specific equipment is used found at private shops--stay clear of dealers-techsnot that xperiencd----unplug the computer and clean the pins then reconnect and see if issue stops-its a common practice on older cars-kinda like a reboot
sounds like it is in get you home because of gearbox failure if its the early box with metal sump check selector cable adjustment it critical as the J gate micro switches and the linear switch on the side of the gearbox have to be in sync with each other. on the other hand if it is the later gearbox with plastic sump, which i suspect it will be, check it has not lost some of its oil due to leaking sump, common problem! other wise check fault codes in transmission control module, any codes relating to incorrect gear ratio means internal falure most times
This can be due to few reasons but the most important can be as follows:
1. If can be a mis-alignment of the gear lever to the gear box as normally the reverse gear is always engage with more movement . so a change of postion or setting can alter the notch settings and refuse to engage properly.
2. Secondly the fault within the gear box, if there is a linkage or counter wheel/gear setting within it will not mesh or engage as the setting would be altered.
3. finally gaps or bush failures in the gear lever, linkages or the gear box will make the movement restricted and hence not engage.
You need to check on all the above. Thank You.
sounds like your clutch is going out, is it hard to put in gear with clutch all the way depressed? could also be the sinkronyzer going out, could be the gears in the transmission also going bad. need to check the fluid in the transmission.
rattling when doing what? if it rattles when it is running or when it is driving, this will tell you roughly where to look. If rattling while idling, coming from engine or transmission. If you ONLY hear it when you are driving, check you U joint. they can wear out and start to rattle and clunk sometimes, especially when going in and out of gear...reverse to drive etc...
