Series of Problems; ABS light, cruise control, weak power/gear shifts, antenna

This is my first FixYa post, so hello all! And we'll see what happens... I was driving back from a trip in my 2001 Saab 9-3 with 130K miles on it when I had a series of problems. Let's start with the preexisting issues. I often get headlight failures and have for years. I have also replaced the DI cassette at least 3 times and the check engine light has come on with a DI cassette code that my mechanic thinks is the result of an electrical issue. Finally, the trunk does not open with the remote and requires a key. Now for the new issue. Early in my trip, I discovered that my radio antenna was not going up or down. No big deal I figured, the motor must have just died. However, later in the trip, as I was driving, I had to stop on the highway and suddenly my ABS, Brake and TCS off lights all came on with an alert chime. This had happened twice before, but only when I first started the car, so on those prior occasions, I simply restarted the car and everything worked fine. However, I tried that here (apparently there was an accident ahead of me, so I was stopped on the highway) and no avail. I ended up driving for a bit and, since it was only the ABS, figured I would resolve the issue after my trip. However, as I approached a more hilly area, I discovered that the engine was revving high (as though the turbo wasn't kicking in properly and it wasn't downshifting correctly). I also discovered that the cruise control was not working (the light came on, but no cruise). Because I was concerned for my safety, I pulled over and, after AAA came, took the car to a repair shop (which was closed...got to love those holiday weekend trips), however one of the guys was there and, although they don't deal with Saab's, ran some basic diagnostics (without the ability to interface with the vehicle's computer, obviously) and determined that the transmission was working correctly, that the car wasn't overheating, and thought that the power issues might be a senor failure. I have looked at other questions and I feel it important to point out that my odometer and speedometer (as well as my tachometer) were all functioning properly. Does anyone know what this could be? Am I right in thinking that this is probably some electrical problem and that all of these problems may be stemming from the same underlying issue? And, if something like this sounds familiar, any ideas of repair cost? Thanks so much!

The abs light and cruise control problems are most likely due to a bad speed sensor.I believe it's located on the driver side front wheel.

P1230 is the error code you get when the ECU decides there is an unacceptably large discrepancy between the two throttle potentiometers. There was a software upgrade that reduced the sensitivity of the error state.

If the garage have read P1230 they ought to be able to read any more codes to find out what is wrong but I would start by making sure the vacuum hoses have all been put back correctly.

P1261= CEL, Engine stalls, idle speed incorrect, cruise control not working

Why would engine light, cruise control and abs light come on?

hello,do post your DTC'S,(diagnostic trouble codes) and may be i can help.many modern vehicles spring up a multitude of warning icon's on the dashboard, much to the alarm of it's owner, however, often it can be as simple as a dirty wheel speed sensor, which fails to provide the necessary information to the main (ABS/TRACTION control unit) and so then will inhibit the cruise control,as naturally it's unable to ascertain road wheel speed, and also throw up the engine management light,as the braking/traction control systems unable to supply correct information to the main engine computer(ECU,OR PCM) electronic control unit/power control module. hope this helps, but please supply any further information that you can, regarding your DTC'S, that are read out,try to get a full print off,if at all possible, cheers.

CK codes c0131 ABS/TCS system pressure circuit malfunction. Their is a Technical Service Bulletin out for this that is being addressed by chevy so you may want to get in touch with them.

Abs light comes on the speedometer wont work and then it will shift into gear hard

Sound like a problem with speed wheel sensor, confirm this consition scanning the ABS module to know fault codes stored there.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Abs light brake light on not shifting

look under the truck at the ****** and check the wiring to the sensors if good may be a bad sensor, also check the wiring and connections to the abs wheel sensors [ located from frame to the hub behind the rotors ] the abs also acts as speed sensor if problem was with an abs sensor at the[ hub] wheel usually set the brake system to normal power brakes [if u hit brakes hard will lock up or skid wheels] with the abs light coming on if the speed sensor at ****** malfunction can and usually causes shift problems

2003 ford explorer abs light is on. how do i turn it off

Hello David,

You don't turn off the abs light. I'm not going to scold on the importance of this, however there is a safety problem here...

I had a similar problem with my Subaru Legacy L wagon.. the cruise control and horn were working only part time... it turned out to be the clock spring in the steering column which supplies power to all these units..

It is critical that you disarm the airbag system prior to beginning: this will require you to have any radio or other codes available and simply disconnect the battery for a MINIMUM of TEN FULL minutes before opening anything up...
You will need a steering wheel puller, if in fact the problem is power here.
Do you have cruise control on the steering colum also? - Is it working? If not it's a good stab to make in saying that it is the clock spring (they are about $20-$40 range, but you get everything powered back up as it is intended to be.
If you do not have cruise control or it is working, you may also need to look into the sensors on the fenders, etc to chase a short down.

Here, you may want to grab a haynes or chiltons repair manual for your year, make & modle vehicle. It will speel out all the sensor locations and tests you'll need to make to get to the bottom of it. The manuals can be found at your local library for free to take out otherwise your local auto parts store for around $20 bucks. These are extremely valuable to have around. BE SURE TO CALL AHEAD to confirm availability. If these options are not working, try your parts department at your local dealer for a print out of the schematic, they can print you a copy (if you ask nicely -- otherwise they may send you to the service department where they will want to charge $$$$'s and do the work for you... Don;t forget if you go to the parts department - ask if the csr has any experience with "regular" problems with this vehicle on the abs and also if there are any recalls for your particular vin number.
Best regards
Ck

Engine light and cruise control light stay on as i drive

Could be a problem with the wheel speed sensor or ABS sensor; first I suggest scanned the computer to know exactly what fault code is stored there. With this code number could send aditional details to fixed.

Keep in touch.

While driving home from work my ABS light illumintaed then my 4X4 high light began flashing. What do you think the problem might be?

For some year models of Explorers involved in the Cruise Control recall, there were additional wiring problems caused by the modification of the Cruise Control. These problems included yours and Brake lights working independent of the brakes. Contact a dealer about this SECOND service bulletin.

The above problems are more likely if the 4x4 is showing a light and the vehicle is in 2 wheel drive. The ABS indicator light is usually to be trusted without the Cruise problem. It would not hurt to check the brake pad linings, sometimes the lining shifts and drops down off the metal of the pads. Finally if the ABS light is still showing a problem that you can not find, check the Emergency brake pads inside the rear rotors.

ON MY FORD F150 IT WON1T GO INTO REVERSE. SHIFTS

Call a dealer about a new recall. There is another problem in the cruise control that is making it hard to put a vehicle into reverse. There are also problems with brake lights and dash indicators for the ABS all caused by the cruise control. This includes about 16 million various Ford products.

Cruise control won't engage

most likely the clock spring is not the problem because when u push the button the dash light cruise comes on.wich means that you do not have an open circuit.with a light tester check to see if you are getting power to the cruise control servo.if you are then replace it.if no power you will need a new cruise control stick on the steering column.
