Fast idle 90 GMC Sierra

I have a 1990 GMC Sierra, 5.7L 4x4. I have a fast idle problem. I have replaced the TPS, IACV, Throttle body gasket, Temp switch, can hear no hissing. I recently replaced the Air Compressor. I pinched off the Vacuum line between the Brake booster and no change. When the AC is on it seems to idle ok, when i turn the AC off, it doesnt idle down... But when i start truck up it idles well... if let sit idle will pick up, of if i tap throttle it idles hi. it will change from 1st to 2nd on its own.

Im not sure if this can help, but my 2000 gmc sierra was idling badly. Replaced Fuel Pressure Regulator and my truck runs like its brand new. My service engine light was also on.

SOURCE: 95 GMC Sierra 4x4 350 5.7 rough idle problem

It sounds like a MAP sensor going bad. MAP is short for manifold absolute pressure sensor, it senses the manifold pressure and applies the right amount of gas with the right amount of ignition timing so the car runs and performs well if this does not work properly. It throws off the whole loop cycle for the computer, which in turn makes it run badly and get poor fuel economy. It can causes the engine to have a lack of power, combined with a loss of fuel economy. Poor take offs and sometimes an occasional stalling may occur if the MAP sensor is faulty and sending the wrong signals to the ECM.
Hope this helps and thank you for using Fixya.

SOURCE: right off idle truck stumbles and will die if you

its time to stop wasting money guessing and verify if parts are good/ bad. ck fuel pressure, and check the tps (Throttle Position Sensor) , see if it runs better with the EGR valve disconnected. If it does, replace it Use only AC DELCO parts they will need number off old EGR valve usually starts with 17------. NOT from ottozone or others.

You never replace anything, on a Wishing,Hoping,Pushing,Poking,diagnostic approach

You learn the vehicles Systems,Test,then Replace,if you have a failed component.

Work on the Misfire Issues.
Then you lean O2 Codes will go away.

Not a the plugs.

Think lean---Vacuum leaks,EGR Valve leak,EVAP System leaks,anything with a hose that lets air into the intake system.
Exhaust System leaks,near sensors

Have you checked for vacuum leaks around the throttle body or intake manifold? If not try that.

Changed my TPS & IACV now truck wont start unless given gas

You should be able to look down the throttle body and see into the air bypass chamber that the IAC uses to divert air around the throttle blade. Look to see if the pintle is all the way out closing off the flow of air. When you turn the key on you should see the pintle move back and allow air to move through. If the pintle is not moving that it may be stuck in the bore. Especially if there is a lot of carbon build up in that passage.

WHAT WOULD MAKE MY CAR ENGINE WANT TO RACE FORWARD

A few possibilities:
  1. Defective throttle position sensor (TPS);
  2. Bad idle bypass circuit or idle circuit solenoid;
  3. Cracked intake manifold, throttle body assembly, or bad throttle body gasket (most likely);
  4. Serious vacuum leak somewhere.

97 sierra fast rough idle, no power, severe knocking

Ok it seems to me like you may have to do some electrical checks, perhaps some voltage checks/drops in order to find out. For the P0118 you could use your scanner provided it can read live data. Look at the coolant temp snsr (cts or ect) and read its value it should read close to intake air temp snsr (IAT) value. The unplug the sensor value should change drastically and go negative. The jump the Two terminals and temperature should go high. If it does you've you've eliminated the circuit and the sensor it faulty. Make sure you have 5v reference as I said before you may have to voltage drop the circuit to make sure you're not loosing any voltage and that the circuit is intact. Good luck! 92 gmc 350 pickup....rough idle..have replaced MAP sensor, fuel filter,PCV valve, and idle control on throttle body...still having the problem

This could be a couple of things:
  1. Check that you have not got any vacum leaks between inlet manifold and cylinder head.
  2. Check your spark plugs and HT leads are in good condition and not worn, reset gaps. If worn replace them.
Worse scenario is the head gasket make be leaking water into a cylinder. Get a cylinder leakage test done to verify any manifold air leaks or faulty sealing head gaskets.
Good luck, let me know how you get on.

if this is a throttle body motor which probably is check for vacuum leak were the throttle body bolts on to the intake .the gaskets go bad after awhile .or listen to here a hissing sound try to locate and you might find a vacuum leak there.

Severeal cylinders misfire

Sounds like the TPS (throttle position sensor) usually located where the throttle body meets the intake manifold. It may need re-calibrating or renewing.

the throttle body gasket might be bad causing a vacuum leak.or possible bad idle air control solenoid.in the throttle body.
