Ok. A few days ago I had my xterra on cruise control at 60 while going up a small hill type thing on the expressway i noticed it kinda shook a little bit, kinda like it was forcing its self to maintain the 60 speed. it had never done that before. i then took it off of cruise. about 15 minutes later when i was near my destination, driving at around 20-30 mph, i noticed that the truck started shaking as if though i was going down a extremely bumpy road, kinda how it feels when you go off track on the expressway and you hit those bumpy things on the road. anyway the bumpy road feeling never stopped. i can feel it in my steering wheel and in the seat of wherver i may be sitting. i also noticed that the exhaust pipe is making a puffing noise that mimics the same rhythm of the bumpiness that the whole vehicle itself is making.. umm what else.. oh yes i took it to auto zone and that machine they check the cars with gave me a notification saying "cylinder number 5 misfire" any info. is helpful thanks.
Each one of the cylinders have there own seperate coil, if cylinder 5 is misfiring then the coil is bad. One cylinder not firing will cause the vehicle to run really rough hope this is helpful
Thanks. Also a while a go i changed cylinder 5s coil to number 6 and then had it re checked and it was still marking as cylinder 5 misfire. any idea whats causing this?

i have ran into this problem before and have had mutilpe coils go bad you could have multiple misfires i would start with cylinder 5 clear the code by removing the postive side of the battery for a couple of seconds to clear the code

I believe you need your disk brake rotors turned to be true again or have them replaced. Whe you use your brakes a lot and kit puddles of cold water then it will warp the rotors which will cause the violent shaking. You may not feel it in the brake pedal even if it is warped rotors. If you don't think you have warped rotors then you should be very careful driving it because it will probably be in the steering sector arm or the idler arm on the steering shaft.

Check the U Joints. My wifes xterra had 80K miles on it, same symptoms. Was a bad from u joint. Nissan mechanics and 1 tire shop could not figure it out.

Most likely the heat shield has corroded off and is just sitting on top of the muffler or Catalytic converter. Regardless you can remove the shield and still run the the Xterra without any problems, the OEM muffler came with a heat shield as to the after market mufflers don't have one. The Catalytic converter also has a shield and you can remove it also as the Xterra has a heat shield on the floor board it self. Most exhaust shop if honest will tell you to just remove the rattling shield if there is no exhaust leaks or no Check engine light on that monitor's the Catalytic converter's performance.
A muffler shop if shady may advise you to replace the Catalytic converter and that can go for up to and beyond $400.00, so as long as there is no leaks or check engine light on. Go right ahead and remove the rattling shield.
Thank you for using Fixya

My 2002 xterra just developed the same problem. I have 2 of those loose metal rings. One on each side of that mesh basket thing. Did you find anything out? I was thinking of just cutting them off.
SOURCE: hello, i have a 2000 nissan xterra 3.3 liter v6
jason, im gonna bet the farm that you have a clogged catalytic converter, if you can get the vehicle to your nearest muffler shop most of them will test the converter for free. they simply drill a small hole in the exhaust pipe in front of and behind the converter and compare the pressure to see if its clogged, call ahead to see if they will test it for free, most will, hope this helps
