I don't think you can assess the condition of the transaxle by spinning the wheels.
The differential in the transaxle converts power from the transmission to the wheels by a set of gears. It would almost impossible for one side to turn at a different speed than the other.
You may have more drag on the brakes on one wheel, or the fluid in the transaxle could cause one side to go slower with the van off the ground.

SOURCE: I have a ford f 150 4x4, that the Passager front

If this is a 2005 F-150 4x4. Usually if there is movement up and down, itmight possibly be the lower ball joints and not the wheel bearing, to verify that it is indeed bearing play you can grab a hold of your tire (with tire of the ground) and try and move it side to side instead of up and down. If you can still feel the movement then it is the wheel bearing. To get to the wheelbearing you will first have to remove the tiny center dust cap in the middle of the wheel. There should be a 13mm bolt you will need to remove under that cap. Next you will have to remove the brake caliper and caliper bridge, then remove the brake rotor. On the backside of the knuckle assembly you will see 4 bolts that hold the hub assembly (your wheel bearing) on. There also may be a plastic ring around the back of the hub assembly too that has vacuum lines running to it for the vacuum hub, this will be held on by 4 or so 8mm bolts, once all these bolts and the4 bolts holding the actuall hub assembly on are removed, you should be able to remove the hub (bearing) assembly from the front of the knuckle assy. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Front End noise and vibration

Check the U-joints and axle baerings. But its most likely because the truck is in four wheel drive.

SOURCE: noise in front end, sounds

You say the rear wheel axles and bearings have been replaced, you mention nothing of the front wheels, you have the symptoms of a front wheel bearing being worn out, remove them and check for pitting in the bearing rollers or the bearing races, I am sure you will find a problem. Hope this helps solve your issue with the bearing noise.

SOURCE: Rear Axle Bearing

i know for a fact that the bearing comes with the hub., and if the old bearing is badly damage you may need to heat it to remove it from the axel...so this may be a rather big job if your not equipt
with torch or other ...

We just bought a 2001 Ford Windstar and it makes a thinking noise in the front right, what could that be? I was told a u-joint but do they make that sound? I thought maybe a spring

Hello Ataya Mickelson,

I'm thinking... you meant ticking...??

Yes they (UNIVERSAL JOINTS) do...
but I pulled up your car on-line and IT APPEARS
you have CV-Joints
(on your "half shafts" (axle, each side)).

So do CV-joints (constant velocity joints) generally always start with a faint ticking... (if dry or hot even squeal) ... these sounds can get a LOT LOUDER ... and quite dangerous.

These joints might progress to grinding and even banging...
or simply FAIL and come completely apart (catastrophic).

Something that should NOT BE IGNORED
.

PARTS are not expensive (see below):

Thinking has always been one of my travails... problems & joys
(when done properly)... but regardless of how well or poorly I have done it... It has always been completely SILENT...
(I'm just saying).

Best regards... hope this helps!!

2001 ford windstar will not turn over, just clicks

This is just a suggestion for a start, this problem is sometimes caused by the Trans-axle Positioning solenoid. It's a place to begin after a new starter has been installed and it still won't turn over.

What is the service schdule? I bought my Windstar

Hello fellow Windstar owner. I just took my 2001 Windstar into a local Ford Dealer here in Chicagoland to have my rear axle inspected. I can tell you that FORD is taking this recall issue very seriously and with that you will not have any trouble having your vehicle inspected and then repaired. FORD goes by your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) as a means to track everything like this recall issue. By the way, FORD really impressed me with the repair that was done to my rear axle and I am very picky (I am a former auto mechanic). You will not have any problems with FORD taking a look at your 2003 Windstar. Just call your local FORD dealer and ask for the service department. Tell them you would like your rear axle inspected per the national recall. Please remember to rate my solution. Thanks!

Steering noise when turning right

Sounds like 1 bad CV joint. Not sure which side. Look at the front axles, and if 1 or more of the boots are torn then that one is most likely the culprit. If you can grab the axles, feel for free plat. A decent shop will be able to pinpoint the bad CV joint and either grease it and replace the boot, or more likely, replace the complete axle on the bad side.
