Loud grinding noise when a/c is turned on. Just before this began I found a piece of black greasy hard plastic under the Nissan that was obviously broken. It was about half of a circular ring, maybe 4 inches in diameter. When looking at the passenger side of the engine with a flashlight I can see what looks like two wheels turning and rubbing against each other or something. I can also see metal filings or shavings.

Yes it is as easy as it looks. If you had the tire off and figured out that it looks easy, you shouldn't have much problem.
