SOURCE: car cuts out while driving, starts again but stoppage more freq.

There is a way, first thing to do is unhook neg. battery cable lieve it off for about 15 to 20 minutes this will erase any codes that are stored in the computer and light will go off, than hook cable back up, start car and drive until light comes on again, when light comes on take to autozone and have it scaned, that should tell you witch one it is, or what the problem is.

SOURCE: crankshaft sensor location on 2001 oldsmobile

. Its above the starter going into the side of the block. (front side of the engine) Disconnect the battery. Remove the starter. Remove the wIre CONNECTOR plug to the sensor. The sensor has 1 bolt holding it in. Remove the bolt, you may have to wiggle the sensor at the base a bit as you pull it out. Replace, and make sure it is pushed in all of the way. Replace the bolt, wire plug, starter, reconnect the battery.

SOURCE: where is the crank shaft

on the 3.4 liter engine, it's behind the harmonic balancer--you have to remove the crankshaft pulley/balancer to see it.

if you have the 2.4 liter, it's just above the oil filter:

Was running fine on interstate, started losing power on hills, cut off would not restart

When it fails to start-- do you have spark or injector pulse or
fuel pressure-- while cranking--?

Could be a crank sensor --but replacing parts with no testing,
is not the way to go --learn how to test components

Could be a crank sensor failed, fuel pump or timing issue,
chain or belt whatever it has

Look at Professional Scan Tool Data--codes or not, that is
always where you start & check the battery out is always a first
step as well

I doubt that it is loss of power to the coil pack. Sounds more like an issue with crank shaft sensor.

Crank sensor wont have any effect on starting, Cam position sensor would. Also check all your fuses.

My 2003 Chevrolet Venture van periodically will not start. It turns over but will not start. If afterthis happens you let the van sit for a half hour or longer it starts as if nothing is wrong

best guess is you need to replace you crank shaft sensor, it is located on the bach of the engine ( fire wall side ) just above the oil pan rail close to the bell housing. when the engine is cold the sensor will have a stronger signal but as it heats up the sensor will fade so when the engine is already at operating tamp. and you turn the engine off it actually gets hotter because the water pump is not moving the coolant any more this is why the sensor loses it signal, the sensor gets weak slowly over time what you will notice after replacing the sensor it the engine will perform much better then it has for quite awhile.

My 97 sunfire has a bad cranck shaft sensor. where is that located? would it also make the car not start?

Yes it would and will make the car not start. Your crank sensor is located behind your harmonic balancer, which is the large pulley that turns all the belts. THe one that is coming off the crank shaft.
