SOURCE: what oil for my 1995 Subaru Legacy 250T?
I know I will get some argument on this one, but regardless of what manufacturers recommend, the best possible lubricant is a good synthetic. They far exceed any manufacturers needs in both lubricity long life and resistance to thermal changes. they do not burn off or form deposits readily and work in any temperature climate. as far as rating, a 10-40 or 50 works for everything. With synthetics those #s are almost a decoration on the can because in reality they cover a far larger span. Personally I would not use mobil1 (too much additive package not enough real stuff) on the other end, amsoil is one of the best (they even offer a 0w50 oil)
Whatever you use make sure you keep it clean. A good oil filter is essential and if extending oil change intervals, you can just change filter and any oil lost.
I know I've ranted, but the actual lab testing results and notes I've made over the years is far longer!
good luck whatever you decide on!
SOURCE: Steering wheel clicks on 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon
steering column bearing sounds like a worn out steering column... jack the front wheels off the ground both sides relieve load on steering wheel to see if it lessens the amount of feel and noise, if it does it shoud be the column bearing, replace bearings or complete column,,, also try with the wheels off the ground and safely supported to manualy steer the wheels by hand and see if you feel in roughness or hear any noises, should some minor resistance but be smooth in it movement if everything suspension and steering component wise is in good working condition... please rate my help.. thanks...
SOURCE: 90 subaru legacy overheats, wheres the thrmostat
Not to be argumentative, but I have had to replace a number of stuck or sluggish thermostats; though often can stick open and cause inadequate temperature; especially uncomfortable in the winter..
..My 1998 Subaru Legacy, was one of those replaced, though overheating; LeBaron was a problem with the poor design and tendency to blow head gaskets---hence 3 or 4 redesigns and a sticky thermostat was not helpful (about every 3 years on my 1989 model); 80's Accords had frequent thermostat replacements that stick in my mind..
...anyway the legacy has a composite themostat housing (though with metal inserts) so be a bit more careful than usual.
...and more importantly, check for signs of weepage from the water pump (weep hole) (directly above the thermostat and to which it is connected); as failure can certainly cause overheating and bad news. ..Unfortunately, the water pump is driven by the timing belt (inside the black cover at the front of the engine and just above and adjacent to the thermostat housing). So listen for sounds coming from this area while the motor is running (with a stethescope preferably or your ear at the end of a long screwdriver or rod) and even some one to rev the engine a bit.
