Loud engine whine (like a jet noise) from 2002 subaru forester

When i step on the gas pedal the engine sound gets louder and becomes a high pitched scream. when i take my foot off the gas pedal it still whines. the sound begins as soon as i start driving and sometimes not until after driving a few minutes.

I have a 99 impreza with a forester engine. It also sounds like a jet. it wines and stops, whines and stops, constant. It gets louder when I step on it. I know it had work done and has new clutch. It supposedly has a high compression engine?

I have this EXACT problem you describe. I fear it is a center differential (based on other boards)

FYI - have a 99 Forester Manual. This problem is unique to the manual tranny

I have Subaru Forester, 2002. Bought it with 67k miles, in amazing condition, but, have a feeling that this whiny noise is growing.
Maybe something noisy in the transmission (rear end, as my mechanic suggested?)
Happens only in gear, only when accelerating. On highway, I switched neutral, and the noise disappeared, and when I was cruising, the sound was softer when I was going downhill. Didn't try reverse.
My theories are somewhere between air intake, and gear.
Any idea, anybody? Subaru, where are you?

Have you crawled under the vehicle and personally inspected your exhaust line from manifold to tail pipe? The roaring sound usually occur when there is a hole in the exhaust line. I had it happen to my forester before. A hole half the size of a dime made my subaru sound like my old 74 chevy pickup.

I listened to a few parts of my 03 forester engine with a stethoscope. I had the same high pitched whine that gets louder when I accelerate. I've even had friends that ask if I have a turbo haha. Anyway, I thought it was a pulley, but it appears to be the power steering pump that makes the noise. It wasn't suggested to me that a new pump was needed, but I might replace it one day to get rid of the noise.

What is making this 08 caliber 2.0L sxt cvt have a High pitched whining sound at idle and driving?

Possible bearing in one of the drive pulleys. I have changed numerous alternators for this noise. Take the belt off and start the car. If the noise goes away you know it will be pulley related and not transmission related. If noise goes away, spin all pulleys by hand to determine the defective/noisy one

Whining when going slow stops when I speed up

Check the idler pulleys on all the engine belts, esspecially the AC compressor. Could also be a worn or frayed belt.

Could be engine "ping" from bad octane in your gas. Try a gas treatment like STP octane boost. If is still does this, check your oil, bad rods or low oil can make this sound too. Try Rislone for oil treatment or Slick 50.

Loud screaming noise when running gets louder when given gas

Sounds like your belt is slipping. I would check the condition of the belt and test the Belt Tensioner.

My brand new 2009 Highlander has this high pitch whining noise right from the start. It happens when decelerating, like if you go on a little hilly road, once you get to the peak and then just let gas...

Your noise is called over-run and its in the gearbox which is also the diff and thats the noise you are getting .
Its the meshing up of the crown wheel and pinion and the only way out of it is to replace the GEAR BOX ASSY with a S/Hand one as you dont get to many doing that noise.
Let me know how you get on. RON

High pitch noise from engine compartment in 2003 Subaru Fores

There is a little beeper that sits just behind the front grill close to the Subaru emblem. It makes the sound you hear when you press the remote to lock or unlock the doors. It sometimes whines for a while but eventually stops. I have had this for a couple of years and it does not appear to have caused any problems.
