I have had the same problem with my Mazda 6, I had done 22500 miles when a light popped up. SO i persisted to go to mazda who much like yourslef told me my driving style is wrong. Which i thought was ludacris. After an expensive diagnostics they said it was due to my egr vavle causing my Diesel Particulate Filter to Block. That was it then they put a £4000 bill if i wanted the parts done in front of me. I laughed out of shear disbelief. I then persisted to look around and noticed on Fixya some one saying about the same problem. They said they had found a company happy to help. SO i persisted to call them, I even asked for the name that was put on the system Darrell i believe, i have to say for someone that doesnt work for mazda i think he should so informative, Unfortuantly the other person said the new part was £500 but darrell told me that the price was £603 allm in with a surcharge, (certainly alot better than mazda anyway). I toyed with the idea for a little while and bit the bullet and ordered it with then. 4 days later a new DPF arrived, 2 days later i took to mazda who said much like Darrell that i must replace the EGR valve and do a full engine oil Flush. I told them to go ahead i paid about 300 for the egr valve and all in all cost me just over a grand. My point is Darrell told me of a good maintenance procedure for these vehicles. Instead of buying a new car as this one aperently "isnt right for me" he told me to once a week blast it through the whole reg range. Since then 5 months on no problems what so ever thought i would share this info with you guys as it seems quite a common fault. Changes to new car emissions legislation scheduled for 2009, the so-called 'Euro 5' standards, will make particulate filters as
commonplace in diesel car exhausts as catalytic converters are on petrol cars. The goal is an 80% reduction in diesel particulate (soot)
emissions.
When the particulate filter warning light illuminatetes it is indicating a partial blockage. Diesel Particulate filters (DPF) or 'traps' catch
bits of soot in the exhaust.
As with any filter (think of the bag in your vacuum cleaner) they have to be emptied regularly to maintain performance. For a DPF this
process is called 'regeneration'
– the accumulated soot is burnt off at high temperature to leave only a tiny ash residue. Regeneration may be either passive or active.
Passive regeneration takes place automatically on motorway-type runs when the exhaust temperature is high. Many cars don't get this sort of use though so manufacturers have to design-in 'active' regeneration where the engine management computer (ECU) takes control of the process.
When the soot loading in the filter reaches a set limit (about 45%) the ECU can make small adjustments to the fuel injection timing to increase the exhaust temperature and initiate regeneration. If the journey's a bit stop/start the regeneration may not complete and the warning light will illuminate to show that the DPF is partially blocked.
It should be possible to start a complete regeneration and clear the warning light simply by driving for 10 minutes or so at speeds greater than 40mph.
If you ignore the light and keep driving in a relatively slow, stop/start pattern soot loading will continue to build up until around 75% when you can expect to see other dashboard warning lights illuminate too. At this point driving at speed alone will not be sufficient and the car will have to go to a dealer for regeneration.
If warnings are still ignored and soot loading continues to increase then the most likely outcome will be a new DPF costing around £1000.
If you buy a car with a DPF fitted it's important to read the relevant section of the vehicle handbook so that you understand exactly what actions to take if the warning light illuminates and how, if at all, your driving style may need to be adjusted to ensure maximum DPF efficiency and life.

Unfortunately this is a problem that you can see also at Ford, Peugeot, Citroen, Opel (Vauxhall), but nobody said nothing. Even for mechanics DPF is something very, very new.
i have a major problem with the dpf light on my mazda 6 143 ts2 turbo diesel.it has been back to the dealer six times in last year.it has 20000 miles on clock on a 56 plate. still the problem cannot be solved.some of the reasons given for this fault are!i should take my car for a longer run out,im not suited to this type of car 2oooo mls is not enough driving to get perfomance from the engine.so why will mazda or the dealer help me out here.instead of telling me silly things like its not designed for me.it was not mentioned when buying the car.
Same D.P.F.problems on 06 Mazda diesel.3 times into a Mazda garage no fault found, codes reset. JAN 09 CAR towed to local garage. £7,000 to repair! Too late for a solution for us, taking dealer to court under 'sale of goods act1979' Recall interesting now are car has been in the garage for 2 months!
Mazda 6 diesel 06 d.p.f.light came on 3 times, towed to garage, no problem found. Now £7,000 bill, Please contact me if you have similar problems, I'm going to fight this the car is only 2 and a half years old!
