1998 Ford Expedition

Possible crank sensor issue. When the vehicle does not start is it not getting fuel or not getting spark or both?

sounds like fuel pump is ready to fail. first check and or change fuel filter. if truck still shuts off then time to test fuel pump. first see if it is running by taking off gas cap and turn on key just one notch short of starting truck. if you hear a hum then your pump is working. but then you may have low pressure. if so then your fuel pump needs replaced. I just did this. its about a 4-6 hour job. go to youtube they have a good step by step video on how to do. good luck

timing probably jumped. This will throw off everything to include fuel pump. No notice prior to mechanical failure. It just happens.

You need to have the engine control computer scanned for fault codes, if nothing shows then it is very possible you have a failing fuel pump.

Fuel pressure test , is there spark ? Videos on youtube showing how to check .

the fuel pump relay contacts may be burned or bad or the fuel pump is crapping out.

This list will be long as to us anything over 30 days parked is old.

If your not a mechanic we can stop here. Have it towed to your local mechanic shop and start with.

Have all fluids and filters changed. (Antifreeze, Transmission, Power Steering.)
Inspect and replace hoses.
Replace Battery.
Pull and inspect brakes.
Repack wheel bearings.
Pull out fuel pump and inspect tank for rust. (DISREGUARD IF YOU ADDED FUEL STABILISER)
Replace fuel pump Highly recommended. If a high mileage vehicle.
Tires look at the 4 digit dot code ensure tires are not over 5 years old it reads like this first two numbers are the week of the year manufactured the last two numbers are the year.

Probably a crank angle sensor, maybe a throttle position sensor, but those usually throw codes out. Could just be a bad computer, too.

I CAN tell you that its probably not your coils packs. Possibly yoyur computer if you haven't gotten it fixed yet. But if you have I would like to know what it might have been.

If the engine is turning over then it is either the fuel or ignition fault.When yoy tried to start after 20 minute,you must have flooded the fuel system(carbureter). Once excess fuel had evaporated the truck started.
You try putting fuel cleaner in tank or carbureter and see if it cures it.
