The low fuel light is on but even after putting gas in my 1999 Expedition, the fuel gauge still shows low fuel. What is the problem? how much gas is in the tank?

First the problem is caused by a defective fuel level sending unit, that is located inside the gas tank, the gas tank must be removed to access the part for replacement. As to the how much fuel remains there is not way to know this.

SOURCE: 1966 Ford Mustang Gas Guage not working

I had a similar problem. In my 1966 Mustang gas tank, the fuel pick-up was on a "float." My float developed a hole, filled with gasoline, and sank to the bottom of the tank, therefore, the gauge always read empty, but the car ran well. All the other gauges of course worked correctly. The repair was a relatively simple soldering job (after removing the float from the tank), but if that is indeed the problem, ensure all the gasoline is drained from the float before beginning the soldering job.

SOURCE: 2000 Ford Expedition Starting problem

If the fuel gauge drops off when you are driving then its a sending unit problem that means you have to drop the tank and replace the float and sending unit. This is a common problem for alot of cars because of cheap gas. If you have to drop the tank check the fuel pump canster for dirt because of cheap gas. Replace the fuel pump strainer and fuel pump filter. If the car or truck has about 100,000 miles you might want to change the fuel pump at that time also just to cover your back. If you take it to a shop they will charge you at least $900 to start. But if you do it yourself it will cost you about $200 dollars maybe alittle more.

SOURCE: FUEL GAUGE SHOWING FULL TANK BUT BUT ONLY HALF TANK OF GAS

Hello. You may have a problem with the fuel sending mechanism in your gas tank or you may have a fungus in your gas tank which is causing it to show much more fuel than you actually have. Drive to an AAMCO repair shop where they will scan your car's computer for free [some auto parts stores now offer this free as well so call around]. If it is mechanical it should show up on the scan, if not you probably have the gas fungus. Some auto parts stores and dealerships now sell an expensive gas tank additive that will kill that fungus. Regards, Joe

2013 Kia Optima. Fuel gauge shows 1/16th of a tank and the low fuel light is not on. Engine shut down. Out of gas. Add gas. Car starts up. What would cause the gauge to misread in this way?

most fuel gauge readings are not that accurate anyway so its out of fuel but not what the is guage reading. but the fuel level sensor in the tank may be at fault sound like its the prob but the instument pack should put the low fuel light on if its fitted on your vehicle spec but not always fitted even though the warning light is present hope this helps

Today while I was driving, The instrument where it telles you how many miles left till empty read 27mi. all of a sudden it started counting down rapidly, within seconds it had went from 27 mi to 4mi left...

Sounds like float in fuel tank is sticking. Usually caused by using cheap gas. Fill it up and add a bottle of STP gas treatment. It might take more then one tankful w/STP to clean it completely. TIP: don't rely on the computer generated "mileage left" especially when that low on fuel, that is only an estimate. And also don't let it get that low on a regular basis because it will damage your fuel pump, fuel is used to cool electric pump in fuel tank and running it that low will shorten the life of your fuel pump.

While driving my gas gauge shows 1/2 full. I put gas in but more than expected it took a full tank. after filling up i started the truck. the gas light came on( now showing empty), as well as the check...

you dont have a misfire, you have deeper problem with the electrical or fuel sender. Even so someone will need to get the code that is stored from the check engine light,,, to proceed.

On my last fill up i pumped 33 gallons, when previous fill ups were less than 26 gallons. I have a 1999 expedition Eddie Bauer. I thought I had a 26gal tank, since with the warning light on and saying 10...

The 99 expedition comes with a 26 gal tank as standard equip. and there is an optional 30 gal available. I suspect the gas pump you used is not accurate, and needs to be recalibrated. I think it's just a coincidence that the gauge is acting up now. Hopefully I'm wrong, and by some miracle you actually are now getting 300 miles on a half tank of gas! You may have a bad sending unit, this would result in inaccurate fuel tank readings.
