I have had to have my BMW X5 2004 transmission rebuilt TWICE in the last 2 years. First, @80K, it just stopped, though engine rev'd. When the trans place opened it up, they said the trans oil was burned, so they rebuilt it for $2,500. I had problems over the year and then it went again during the warranty and they repaired it, free. Lasted 14K Miles. I got ALOT of Trans Failsafe Prog lights. When I turned off the car, it reset, but ultimately came back on, and forewarned an impending trans failure. When the trans went the 2nd time, I bought a USED 40K trans from LKQ (I was lucky to find one with low mileage) for $2K and had the trans place put it in. NO PROBLEMS now. I got this advice from a BMW dealer parts guy out in PA - NO ONE can really rebuild BMW Trans well. Either go for a remanufactured one, or a low mileage used one. Getting them rebuilt at the local trans place will only give you heart aches and you'll end up doing the job again. ALSO: DO NOT WAIT FOR the BMW recommended 100K miles to replace the trans fluid. I suggest 60K. That's the #1 cause of trans failure. I'm out $6K on trannys now, but I'm about to take legal action. One more thing - I used K-Solv in my radiator, and the Trans guy told me that it clogged up the trans cooler. He took off the cooler lines and put a video tube camera up there, and yes, it showed cloggage. Jury is out on who's the real culprit here. Bottom line: Trans Program Failure is a pre-cursor to transmission failure. Get ready... Don't let a local shop rebuild it! Start shopping for a low mileage used one!

Sounds like you maybe having a sensor failure (engine). A computer diagnostic can be performed at the vehicle dealership to determine what caused the fail safe mode to activate.

SOURCE: computer says 'trans fail safe

  1. Turn the car off for a couple of minutes and then crank it up to see if the message is still there.
  2. Have a dealer reset the ECU, or get the code cleared at Autozone, etc.
  3. Check the transmission fluid level and correct as necessary.
  4. Have your battery checked and replaced.
  5. Get the alternator checked and replaced if the battery checks out fine.
  6. If you have an amplifier connected to the battery, disconnect it and see if this error goes away. If it does, you may have a weak battery. Replace the battery.

What are the causes of engine failsafe p in Bmw x5 2006 model

The reason is the engine speed and transmission speed sensors don't agree. It could be caused by a bad transmission speed sensor, bad transmission fluid, a failed solenoid in the valve body ( in the transmission pan), a worn out valve body, a bad transmission, improper tires(that don't match each other), a faulty MAP sensor (air flow sensor on the air intake), faulty engine speed sensor and possibly a few other things.

Get the codes with a reader, and it might direct you in the right direction. But take the reading with a grain of salt, because it rarely tells you the exact problem. My fail safe came on and the code was TCC solenoid, but after replacing that, I had to install a rebuilt valve body to solve the problem.

Check compatibility of gearbox ECM with gearbox. You will need the serial codes of the ECM and ask manufacturer for relative compatibility with gearbox type.

Smart car keeps cutting out whilst driving

If all power is lost in the car, it could indicate a bad battery connection, bad wiring, or loose main wire harness, etc.

If a warning light comes on - it may be going in to Safe Mode.

Safe mode is the set of parameters that the car will use if it believes there
is a fault with the engine that could cause irrepairable or long term damage.

Generally it is an excess in expected boost pressure entering the engine.
This excess boost from the turbo tends to happen for 4 reasons.

The boost pressure sensor (MAP sensor) is faulty.
The wastegate is seized shut or slightly open.
The wastegate actuator is faulty.
The air line to the wastegate actuator is damaged or off.

Obviously, if the sensor is faulty, it will tell the ECU lies about the boost pressure.
If the wastegate assembly fails in any way it will fail to open to bypass the turbo.
The turbo will continue to spin up, increasing the boost pressure, causing the fault.

Initially I would suggest disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes (make sure you know your
radio code before doing this), this will turn safe mode off and your car should run normally
again. Drive home with a bit of care, you may find the car might never do it again. If it does
go into safe mode again, you know you have a real problem and not just a glitch.

Best to contact your dealer and have it checked out.

Your transmission is going into safe mode, which means that there is a faulty selonid, or connection in it. I would take it to a trusted transmission shop so they can correctly diagnose it. If you continue to drive it in safe mode, you will burn the transmission up. It is worth having a technician look at it. You may be looking at a PCM-powerterain control module issue as well.

BMW x5 warning light fiasco

Hello This is Mike,,

Sometimes.... Sometimes this will take care of some of those faults and codes, and it only takes a few minutes to do. I know your problem is not exact as this reset method says, but however you would be amazed on this fixes a lot of things, it like a cheap way to reset computer and fixes a lot of things back to default mode. Try it and let me know. Mike

IT'S VERY EASY TO RESET THE TRANSMISSION'S COMPUTER. HOLD GAS PEDAL DOWN. TURN THE KEY TO THE NUMBER TWO. CONTINUE TO HOLD THE GAS PEDAL DOWN FOR THIRTY SECONDS.RELEASE THE GAS PEDAL AND PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL FOR TEN SECONDS. NOW YOU CAN TURN THE VEHICLE ON. THAT SHOULD TAKE IT OUT OF SAFE MODE
