I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee that won't start. Can't read codes - claims we need to check connections. Cranks fine. Notice that fuel gauge and battery voltage does not register anythin

Was running fine and went to pull out into an intersection. Vehicle died and won't start. Know we have plenty of fuel and battery voltage.

Hi Roger, Sounds to me as if you may have a problem with the anti theft unit in your vehicle. A diagnostic scan would help greatly to pin point the problem. Regards John

Are you getting spark from coil wire when cranking? If so, check the cap & rotor. If not, the most common failure is the crank sensor. If you have a 4,0, you can find it on the drivers side of the bellhousing, in line with the flywheel, just where it's annoying to work on. There is a test you can make, but I don't have the specific test values or the correct terminals to check. (you can find that info in any half decent manual.

The crankshaft position sensor was seriously problematic in those old jeeps. It's located towards the top of the bell housing slightly to the driver's side I think.

SOURCE: 99 jeep cherokee sport 4.0l 6cyl voltage will go to 19v

The problem sounds intermittent, if you put volt meter on the battery while it is at that 19volt mark/reading(on the gauge cluster) you will be able to see if it is true. If your alternator is really charging over 16volts the lights should be getting brighter then usual and/or they are burning out. Find out ASAP, if the alternator has a defective voltage regulator, it needs to be replaced. Prolong use will damage components.

My 2003 jeep grand cherokee will start fine after it sits overnight or for a hour or so but won t start if i go to the store and get in it five minutes later. After 1 hour it cranks right up

Sounds like a fuel mixture issue, being a 2003 must be EFI, could be faulty mass air flow sensor, fuel mixtures being to rich when engine is at operating temp.

My 1995 grand cherokee takes a lot to start. turns over fine, but won't fire. checked fuel rail, no pressure. after trying 15 times or so, it will start and run just fine. starts right back up unl

Your Jeep has what's known as the delayed start, no check engine light problem. The Jeep will not start until the check engine light comes on, on the dashboard. Next time it cranks but will not start, look at the dashboard to see if the check engine light is illuminated. If it's not lit up, then your Jeep does have that problem and your Jeep ecu is in need of repair or replacement. There are components inside the ecu that are going bad and will continue to get worse, eventually leading to a permanent no start condition. There are ecu repair services and replacement ecus on ebay.

Cranks, but won't start

Could be the crank sensor is bad but If the check engine light does NOT come on when cranking at the times when it won't start, then your ECU is in need of repair. The engine will only start after the check engine light comes on and the ecu is what controls that. It's likely going bad, causing the delayed start problem typical of early 90's jeeps. Repair or replacement services for your jeep ECU are available on ebay.

2003 jeep cherokee larado cranks but no start. battery is brand new. how do you electrically check the fuel pump relay?

Before you jump relays, have you checked for engine codes relating to the issue your having with this vehicle? If so, what are the codes? You can swap a relay from another circuit in the PDC box. Most relay's are ISO and as long as the connectors are the same pattern, you can use it to verify a defective relay from a different circuit.

Have you tried reading the trouble codes from the ecu to see what's actually gone bad? A bad crank sensor will not allow the ecu to pulse the injectors and spray fuel.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Sport it just won't start. It cranks, that's it. It was running fine yesterday.

If it was running yesterday and only cranks this morning you need to determine which you are missing - spark or fuel. The spark is easy - pull a plug and let it spark to the frame. while cranking. If you have spark then you have to start checking the fuel system.
