Why won't 2003 pontiac grand prix. shifter come out of park?

Shift button will not depress. When pushing on the button and pulling back, the whole shifter raises up but will not come out of park. The key is not stuck in the ignition and it will come out of park when I use the manual shift release. Smacked down on the top of the shifter and then the button depressed and it came out of park. What's the fix? I don't want to have to smack it or use the manual release every time. :)

Shift - interlock system problem .
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of PARK position. The system consists of the following components:
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The automatic transmission park lock solenoid
• The automatic transmission shift lock control switch
• The transmission range switch
With the ignition in the ON position, battery voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The transmission range switch provides a path to ground for the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid in the PARK position. With the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid energized the shift lever is mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position. When the shift lever is out of the PARK position the controlled ground contacts in the transmission range switch open. This prevents the automatic transmission shift lock solenoid from energizing when the vehicle is out of the PARK position.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac aztec gear shift button wont depress.

there is a bypass for the safety switch, unfortunately you have to remove the shift cover, the whole plastic piece. there is a white "lever" that you can push that will move the pin out of the way so you can shift it, you have to hold the piece and move the shifter at the same time. it is on the right side of the shifter base (under the plastic piece) you will see what I mean when you remove the center piece.

SOURCE: 2006 Nissan X Trail Gear Shift Stuck in Park.

This is not a permanent fix, but you'll be able to shift and drive...this is a "safety feature" when you're break lights aren't working...it may be a fuse issue, i found that didn't help either.

How to drive it while it's "broken" On the top left of your gear shift is circle that looks like a button that is only 3/4 there...see picture (it's circled in red)

e024280.jpg
pry that off with a key or something... now restart your car, push on the break and at the same time insert a key or something into the now open hole...while pushing down use the other key to shift into reverse. You will need to do the same thing to shift back into park.

Good heavens that is the most inneficient safety feature I've ever heard of. How about instead of leaving the car immoble and keeping you in a scetchy neihborhood to get mugged they just "invent" a warning light notification. grr

My '97 grand prix wont shift from park. What is

Hi, you have a malfunctioning brake/park interlock. When you go to shift out of park, as you know, you have to hit the brake or the shifter won't jump out of Park into Reverse. The interlock device that in this system is probably failing.

The gear shift is locked in place and will not shift into reverse. The vehicle has a shift release button on the console to the right of the shifter. When depressed the button unlocks the shifter and the...

It has a brake-transaxle shift interlock. You should just push the brake in to shift, but if you have done that, and it still won't shift, with foot on the brake, push the shifter all the way into park. Sometimes they don't always go into park all the way. Also if you park on a hill, it puts pressure on the btsi, so you cant shift it. Have someone push the vehicle back, just enough to take the pressure off and it should shift. I had this happen to me with my Grand Am.

Shift gear is stuck on park and can't get it out of gear.

Hi there,

There are multiple things that must all happen in order for the shifter to move from park.

1. Make sure the key ignition switch is in the "Run" position (the position just before the "start" position).

2. Brake pedal is depressed (usually pushed in a couple of inches or more at least to release the button on the shifter).

3. Push in the button on the shifter and pull back (you may need to push the shifter slightly forward or back a little for the button to move freely).

If the button on the shifter still doesn't push in freely, there is a problem with the mechanical lock-out linkage or electronic switch that releases the button lock. Check under the dash area along the brake pedal arm for anything that doesn't look correct.

4. If the car is on an incline/slope/hill, it will put a lot of pressure on the parking pin in the transmission. Usually a strong tug or pull on the shifter will pull it out while you're pushing on the brake pedal to prevent rolling when it releases. Make sure to set the parking/emergency brake first to prevent this next time .

Good Luck!!

Thanks

2002 Grand Prix will not shift out of park.

Check all fuses and make sur eyou don't have a blown fuse, first if they are all good then there is a switch on the top of the brake paedal that releases the lock on the shift (Its a safety so that if a kid is in the car with out pressing on brake they could engage the shift to drive) THat switch may be bad. Godd Luck

2003 grand prix se automatic

hi,

my 97 would do that, theres a switch in the shifter that senses that the vehicle has been put in park, its either come out of alignment, gunked up or broken, you can try "flicking" the button the you push to take the car out of gear a few times, (push, then let your fingers come off of it quickly) in park and see if it will let you have it, but it will need to have a new microswitch put in the shifter, the whole console has to come out, disconnect battery and start looking for screws inside the console storage bin and work your way forward all the way to the front of the console, some screws are hidden. study the switch assembly and remove it and maybe you can just clean and repair it, it may be just gunked up, but the part is around 75.00 (shift lever assembly).

good luck
