When driveing over bumpy roads at low speed there is a knocking noise behind drivers seat. Sounds like a loose parcel shelf. Have checked exaust and rear bumper but they seem ok.

Same issue..sounds like a hammer hitting the rear quarter panel. Notice the unit inside the spring (shock? strut? mounting plate?) moving way too much. What is this? What parts should I get?Same issue..sounds like a hammer hitting the rear quarter panel. Notice the unit inside the spring (shock? strut? mounting plate?) moving way too much. What is this? The parcel shelf is that flat area behind you head of the rear seat. Normally has speakers or junk on it. On hatch back cars it lifts up as you open the hatch.
Hard to say without hearing it but check front stabiliser "d" bushes for wear & check all subframe bolts are tight. Does the noise stop if you press the brake lightly.
Sounds like the Spring may be broken or there is another loose front end part such as a ball joint or a spring seat or something like that.
I had a broken spring on my 1990 Cadillac Deville and didn't know it until looking at it up under the wheel, and experiencing a popping or knocking sound when turning.
its probably your bump stops. the vw ones are very soft. i bought ford escort (the shape after the xr3) ones and cut them a little down to fit. i think the noise is either your shock touching or the sound of the tire scraping the body of the car. hope this helps.
