Sounds like a problem with crank, cam or the knock sensor.

  1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
  2. Drain the fuel tank.
  3. Remove the fuel tank.
  4. Remove the fuel sender assembly.
  5. Note the strainer (1) position for future reference.
  6. Support the reservoir with one hand and grasp the strainer with the other hand.
  7. Use a screwdriver to pry the strainer ferrule off the reservoir.
  8. Discard the strainer.

SOURCE: 2001 pontiac sunfire wont start, it died going

more than likely your fuel pump went out. spray a small amount of fuel (like 1 or 2 ccs from a syringe, or similer device) into your intake, and try starting it. If it fires, but doesn't continue to run, then it's not getting fuel. The fuel pump is the most common problem. You can also try to "wake up" the fuel pump by hitting the fuel tank with your hand (underneath the back of the car) and trying it again. If it works, then remember, it is only a temporary thing...it WILL quit again, and probably for good, so don't drive it anywhere you can't handle being stuck. Other possible problems; fuel pump relay, bad injector, and ignition fault. The prime that you give it will determine which direction to go. If you prime it wiith a little fuel and it doesn't fire, look at your ignition system. If it does, then the ignition is working fine; you need to look at the fuel system. Hope that helps you, and hope you get your car back on the road soon.

Why when i poor gas in carb it runs and then a few mins later dies

Test the fuel pressure, if it's low or non existant, you have a bad fuel pump, fuel pump regulator, or clogged fuel filter. That car has a throttle body, not a carburetor. All fuel injected cars have throttle bodies

1998 pontiac sunfire manual. Car starts but sputters and then dies and is completly dead but in the morning will start again and then die. I changed the coil pack but still the same. what can it be?

You can't do any testing, until you have a battery
that will take and hold a charge

Then you move on to testing the Alternator, then
Fuel Pressure & continue on with other testing

2000 pontiac grand am - not starting. fuel pump does sound like its runing when you first turn the key. If you spray starting fluid into the intake it will start but will not keep running.

If it fires on starting fluid, its not getting fuel. If you have acess to the tools test the fuel pressure. If not start with the filter, its cheap and if the pump sounds like its running this would be the next major cause. If that dont fix it, its probably the pump. Had a sunfire around the same year that would actually run for ten minutes or so before it died. Never checked the fuel pump because the car would run so I assumed it was working, I mean you could hear it kick on. But after changing every thing else the car ended up needing a fuel pump. Hope this helps

My buddy has a 89 pontiac sunfire. It sat for a while and he just started driving it, let the gas run out and put new in and then it stopped running. Today we sprayed starter fluid into the throttle and it...

You could have a bad pump motor in your fuel pump. You will hear the "hum" of the pump motor but it won't continuously feed enough pressue to the system.
When you prime it the engine will draw enough to run for a bit then quit. They usually dry out if not kept full and sunfire fuel pumps are noted for this type of failure.
Try a used one for about 75 bucks. My kids Sunfire did exactly the same thing.

Trying to locate the fuel filter and pump...

The fuel filter is in the hood (metalic black) and the fuel pump is in the fuel tank (either through the back seat or bringing the tank down.

6.5 tubbo diesel died and wont start back

Sounds like the fuel pump got air in the system. You may have to bleed out the air. Then it will run. Check the fuel tank for fuel first.

1998 pontiac sunfire,lost acceloration on highway,wont start

This sounds like either the fuel pump has failed or the fuel filter is plugged, another thing that can cause this is a plugged catalytic converter, i doubt the issue is the fuel pump relay.
