Thermostat apparently will not close completely - fault indicates engine not reaching optimal running temp. thermostat replacement not so obvious - what are watchouts? what is best approach?
The thermostat is in the engine block. If you follow the bottom fadiator hose is will lead you to it.

if the coolant is full and all the air is bleed out of the cooling system make sure the cooling fans turn on if not then check the relays and fuses and wiring. and if thats ok then use a block tester to check for a combustion leak. you can get a block tester for a parts store you simply install it in place of the radiator cap and run the car the chemical in the block tester will change color from blue to yellow if there is a combustion leak.

follow the top radiator hose to the engine...it's inside that assembly.
Refill and bleed the air out of the system when you replace the coolant.

There is a special tool you need to do this. It is virtually impossible to do without this tool. I got mine from Harbor Freight for $20. the kit comes in an small orange case and has multiple heads and it pushes and turns at the same time. Do not use a C-clamp, it will damage the piston. This tool still does use some manual labor, but it is worth it when you save a few hundred dollars doing it yourself!
