2000 Buick Century - Replaced steering column with salvage unit with different key, now vehicle wont start, please help!!

My key wouldnt work. It wouldnt turn or anything. In order to replace the lock cylinder you have to be able to turn key. Instead of drilling out ignition lock cylinder I got the bright idea to replace the steering column that came with different keys. Well all that is done and I cant start the vehicle due to passkey system. What are my options??

The BCM (body control module) is seeing the wrong passkey code. You will have to find out what passkey code is being used in the new steering column you installed them see if the BCM can be reprogrammed for it Some can not be reset.

Ignition Switch
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
The switch is located inside the channel section of the brake pedal support and is completely inaccessible without first lowering the steering column. The switch is actuated by a rod and rack assembly. A gear on the end of the lock cylinder engages the toothed upper end of the rod.
Lower the steering column, be sure to properly support it.
Put the switch in the OFF, unlocked position. With the cylinder removed, the rod is in the lock position when it is in the next to the uppermost detent. The OFF, unlocked position is two detents from the top.Remove the two switch screws and remove the switch assembly
To install:
Before installing, place the new switch in the OFF, unlocked position and make sure the lock cylinder and actuating rod
are in the OFF, unlocked (third detent from the top) position.
Install the activating rod into the switch, then assemble the switch onto the column. Tighten the mounting screws. Use only the specified screws since over length screws could impair the ability of the steering column to collapse. Reinstall the steering column.

SOURCE: 2000 Buick Century wont start, new ignition

Make sure all the fuses are good. Check the fuse panel inside the car and the fuse box under the hood. Find the starter relay and swap it with another one and see if the starter works. If that didn't make any difference, try this:Make sure the transmission is in park, emergency brake on. Turn the ignition key on. Find where the positive battery cable is attached to the starter. Attach one end of a jumper cable to the connection. Take the other end of the jumper cable and ground it against the starter solenoid where the wires are connected. This should start the car, or at least make the starter work.If the car starts but won't stay running, then it is probably the security system at fault. If you went to a dealership for the new switch and keys, you probably paid quite a bit for it.There is a cheaper way to fix it, and it will last forever. It's a bypass system from a company called New Rockies. I think you should check out this website: http://newrockies.ca/vatsbypass.

How do you tighten the steering column on a 1988 Oldsmobile 98?

What is the problem with it? The column is bolted tight to a heavy dash brace. At the bottom, the center steering shaft has a coupling to the rack and pinion steering gear (just below and behind the engine). The steering wheel is fixed tight to the center steering shaft.
If you have a tilt feature and that is what is loose, worn parts cannot be tightened up, but need replaced. And expensive for new parts-consider a used column from salvage yard.

If you look at the key you should see a back plastic piece with a little metal strip in it try to clean it with alchol. it is a resistor that tells the car it has the right key

2000 ford expedition wont start, security light in dash keeps flashing when trying to start, speedometer and gauges move when trying to start,,,fuel pump was replaced last year,,please help.thanks.

Your vehicle is equipped with a passive theft deterrent system that utilizes a "pill" embedded in your key along with a receiver contained in the steering column. If the system doesn't recognize your key, the vehicle will crank but not start and the theft light will flash rapidly. If you have another key, try it. Otherwise, you're in for a trip to the dealer where they can either reset the system or troubleshoot it further.

Good luck.

My 1996 Buick Century has a cruise control issue

There are many components in the cruise system. That system does not work with vacuum. The first thing I would check is the multi-function switch (the turn signal, wiper, cruise switch arm). On the back side of the turn signal arm is a plug that plugs into the steering column. Make sure that it is seated, or plugged in firmly. If you have had any work done recently on the steering column like turn signal switch replacement. That plug my have been disconnected and not reconnected completely. These multi-function switches do go bad. They are easy to replace though but a new one will cost over $100. Also the wire harness in the steering column do sometimes break off. The next thing I would check is the control unit. The cruise control unit is on the drivers side of the engine compartment right by the strut tower and the brake master cylinder. It has a cable attached to it going to the throttle body. Find the wire-harness plug on the back side of it and make sure that it is seated firmly in place. Considering the age of the vehicle My first guess is the multi-function switch. I have had to replace mine twice in my '96 cutlass, but I have also had to replace the wire harness in the steering column as well. It could be the switch on the brake pedal, or the vehicle speed sensor. I hope this gets you started in the right direction.

Car wont start when i turn the key

The first thing you need to check is whether the key has a pellet in it or "chip". If it does...the problem is most likely your key lock cylinder. Go buy a new key lock cylinder....KEEP YOUR OLD KEY. Take your new lock cylinder down to any Chevrolet dealer to find out what the VATS number is for your key....then have the dealer cut you a new key with that same VATS number...then go to your vehicle and remove the negative battery cable...this does two things...1. It resets the computer after a five minute period of no power...2.. allows you to work on the steering column without power on it.

Remove the steering wheel with the aid of repair manual.

Put the new key lock cylinder with the wire running down the steering column. Then put the steering column back together....Hook up the negative battery cable, then use your new key that was CUT and your car should start
