The seat position is an automatic not a gear shift.

    The seat is electric

Do not know then, but it sounds like the seat may need to come off for repairs.

The adjusting lever for seat position is not locking into place. On the bottom of seat are runners on each side with holes in them that the adjusting lever tabs will lock in and hold seat in place. The seat slides on the runners if those tabs are raised. There is also a connecting wire or rod from the lever to the other side of seat so when lever is pulled up, tabs on both runners are raised for seat to slide. Something is keeping the tabs from locking into the holes on the runners in your car. Maybe the adjusting lever is broken somewhere, or the wire/rod came loose, or the lever is just dry and sticky and needs a shot of WD40 to loosen it up. If you can't see it and fix it with seat in place, then pull the seat back off for the repair. Good luck. Post back if my explanatiopn is not clear or you still need help.

SOURCE: Seat Position Cant be moved

The manual lever to release the seat is supposed to have a spring on it to return the release lever to the lock position, if the lever does not spring back when you let go of the seat adjustment lever then you know there is a missing, dis-connected, or broken return spring.

If this is the case try putting the seat where you want it to be and make sure that the adjustment lever returns to the lock position, now check to see if the seat will lock in with the adjustment lever in the lock position.

If it does lock in repair or replace the return spring.

Make sure that the adjustment lever is attached to the locking linkage and it does move the locking mechanism.

If it still does not lock into place then there is something wrong with the seat locking mechanism, and some WD-40 sprayed onto the seat rails and track might release a stuck mechanism, and if everything seems to be working alright, and you can see that the locking mechanism in the seat rail is moving in and out of the lock position, then the locking tabs are most likely sheered off and you will need to replace the seat.

Also look under the drivers side seat and compare the lever position and the linkage connections with the passenger side seat, and make sure that it is all operating like the drivers side seat.

SOURCE: 1995 Lincoln Continental, passenger seat won't tilt back forward

YOU HAVE A SWITCH OR A TILT ACTUATOR MOTOR PROBLEM. LINCOLNS HAVE 5 OR 6 ELECTRIC MOTORS MOUNTED ON THE UNDERSIDE OF EACH FRONT SEAT WHICH REQUIRES REMOVING THE SEAT TO INSPECT .THEIR ARE ALSO CABLES ATTATCHED TO THESE MOTORS SO LISTEN WHEN YOU HIT THE TILT SWITCH DO YOU HEAR A MOTOR NOISE? IF YOU DO THEN YOU MAY HAVE A BAD CABLE.

SOURCE: 1999 volvo s80 passenger seat stuck in forward position

you will need to check to make sure no coins fell into the track and is jammed it if not you will need to replace the bottom frame of the seat possible with a junk yard one much cheaper than buying new and junkyard frames come complete.

2011 subaru forester front passenger seat belt is locked too tightly and will not release, how do I fix?

The reason is the belt mechanism is damaged and the belt needs to be replaced. What happens is the gears lock this usually only happens when the vehicle is in a collision or has a major and hard stop

Manually move power seats

Not really a cheap way to fix it. You have a motor and cables that turn to move the seat. The motor and cables would need to be removed to allow the seat to move, then there would be nothing to keep the seat in place unless you put the motor back.
A manual seat uses a latch and slotted track to move the seat and lock in place.

Before you do any of the expensive things disconnect and reconnect the wiring to the seat I had the same exact problem with my 2009 Chevy Impala and was ready to take it to the dealer when I disconnected the power cables to it and reconnected them I found that one of the Harnesses was loose and the problem was solved

I have a 99 Silverado and the passenger side seat back will not lock back into the upright position. Locks fine into reclining positions. What could be the problem?

i had this problem on my 96 chevy, basically theres a set of ratcheting gears that lock the seat in place in the various positions. sometimes over time or due to abuse one side or the other gets stripped out and the seat will no longer lock into place. i found a ripped up seat on Craigslist that was in a part out truck and bought it cheap then took both seats in the an upholstery shop, between the junked out seat (15 bucks) and the labor at the shop (50bucks) it cost me 65 bucks to fix, hope this helps

Automatic driver seat broken, how to fix/cost

The back and foward movement uses the same motor. So if it moves one way but not the other it's most likely the switch. Try to blow it out or clean it out. If pop or somthing spilled on it you will prob. need to pull switch out and take it apart to clean contacks inside.
