It is a 5 speed manual transmission,,, when u shift from 3rd to 4th the shifter does move a little sideways to go between the gears... but will not swing over to go into first or second,,, u can try to go to 5th gear but it will only grind and not go in,,, it will not shift down into reverse,,, so all i have is 3rd and 4th gear...
SOURCE: shifter stuck in second gear
Your shift linkage has come undone. Jack the car up and climb underneath. You shift linkage is either com undone from the trans or you shift stabelize bad has come undone at the shift arm.
SOURCE: 1997 pontiac sunfire manual transmission won't shift out of gear.
What you can try is to remove the shift cables from the transmission side. then move the shifter and see if everything is free if it's still sticks then the cables are going to be replaced. if everything is moving with the cable off. then you need to remove the shift tower on the tranny (where the shift cable is I belive it's 5 bolts) remove the tower and you will see the shift pin. Inside the tower there is a cotter pin that breaks and that will cause you to have one gear and unable to selected another gear. If you are not mech inclined I would no attemped the shift tower repaire, the cables do it will save you money. The shift tower has bushings that can fall into the tranny.

Manual or auto?
It's gotta be the cable/linkage. You just have to inspect them and see if something is worn or snapped. They get old and crusty and need to be replaced eventually. I had to replace my shift cable on my 86 se with the 5-speed getrag.
Hopefully it's not the actual tranny....?
SOURCE: Hi. I have a
Sounds like a low pressure problem that commonly is due to low ATF
fluid condition so check your fluid level and color first. If the fluid
is at the right level with the engine warm running and in the park
position, there are some other low pressure problems with this
transmission.
On this vehicle are common failures of the
Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid (PCS) and the connections at the
Transmission Pass-Thru Connector.
Keep in mind that this problems with the Transmission PCS are
identified in TSB # 00-07-30-002B. Problems with the connections of the
Transmission Pass-Thru Connector are identified in TSB #02-07-30-022B.
Remember, the cost to replace the Transmission PCS is estimated at $350 The cost
to repair the Transmission Pass-Thru Connector is estimated at $150.
Hope helps.
