Why does it keep overheating 2003 Pontiac Grand AM V6

I need help... my car is still overheating.. i have put a new thermostat, water pump, and head gasket in my 2003 pontiac grand am V6, and its still overheating.. at first when i drive it on the freeway it will not overheat until i get off freeway and im in town.. once i park it the coolant will come out of the reservoir because its too hot.. i replaced the thermostat two times because i thought the first one was bad.. i did the check in hot water to make sure the second one wasn't.. once the temp goes up it will blow out cold air, but it only does it every so often.. please help this car is driving me crazy and costing me way to much money.. Fans are working and this type of car doesn't have a radiator cap its the same cap as the coolant reservoir... system was flushed after the head gaskets were put in... no leaks from radiator, is it still possible radiator is bad?

SOURCE: 1999 Pontiac Grand Am Overheating

I had the same problem on my 1999 Pontiac GA 3.4 litre. Replaced a bunch of stuff. It just kept pushing the coolant out the overflow once the temp got to 200 + like to drove me nuts. Ended up being that reservoir. If you measure the O.D. of the cap(brand new cap) and the I.D. of the reservoir filler neck there is no way it will seal(even tried to fit a different type cap,no luck). The system has to be able to build pressure or the coolant will boil out at 212. Causing the coolant to be pushed out the reservoir. Why? you say or How? did the filler neck increase in size. I dont know but GM has write ups about this problem. They say sand it with a piece of sandpaper to smooth it. Maybe someone sanded it way to much?? Around $40 bucks and I was on my way. Hope this helps someone.

If electric fans are coming on, and you have filled the system with the heater turned on high to purge it of air, even though you flushed it, I'd have the radiator flow tested (even when flushing, coolant tends to go around internal blockages, limiting its ability to work correctly) otherwise you need to begin testing from square one like you had never seen it before (don;'t assume anything you did is working) Pressure testing of coolant system, hydrocarbon test at fill opening and engine compression tests are important as well as what I mentioned above.

is the engine fan coming on? , when the heads were removed ,were they pressure tested. u may need to use a carbon block test from the coolant tank. the liquid will turn a different color if exhaust gas is present in the coolant, which would be a internal problem

It is probably the problem. To make shure that need to change the gaskets, one of the symptoms use to be thet the temp rises when you are running at speed 50+ average, where is supposed that the car gets a lot of air due by the speed and nobody thinks that will be overheated.

You have sir in the system. You have to purge the air outdo that the thermostat can open and coolant can actually circulate through the engine.

I recently replaced my water pump. this afternoon my car overheated and radiator fluid was leaking above the water pump

Check your thermostat. It may be sticking and keeping the coolant from flowing, hence the overheating. Where above the water pump is it leaking? Hopefully you didn't blow a head gasket.

Overheating

That leaves radiator or radiator fan problem or wrong thermostat. Did you or a mechanically inclined friend do the repairs ?

Engine overheating in Pontiac Grand-am 1997,, we changed the thermostat, and it did nothing

could be the water pump or the head gasket, warped or cracked head... what size motor if its a 2.4 the water pumps on them are very hard to replace.

If its the 3.1L it could be your intake manifold gasket , the material used for the gasket does not react well with GM's Dex-Cool antifreeze. The leak may not be apparent at first, but I would pressure test the cooling system. If you look at the front of the motor by the belts , try to peek down at the intake manifold and check for slight seapage to an obvious leak.

If its either of the Quad-4's they were notorious for heads warping or cracking.
