Transmission skittering, whirring, buzzing noises

I have an '06 (NOT 2002) impreza sport wagon with 64K miles and auto trans, and have been noticing these noises, especially when the tranny is cold. when it warms up, they go away but i can hear them again with a strong takeoff until it gets into the upper gears. when cold and stopped at a traffic light, putting the car in neutral or park makes them go away. after warming up, it's fine if i drive with an extra light foot, for mileage.

this is the last year of my lease and need to find out if this car is a keeper. thanks in advance for any help!

Hi. I think you have a low tranny fluid level. If you never changed it, now would be great time to do so.

SOURCE: When i put it in reverse it makes a loud clunk

Hi Ali,

This sounds like one or more of your motor/powerplant mounts is broken. Here is an easy test:

Have someone sit in the driver's sear with engine running and trans. in Park.
You stand in front with the hood open. Have them shift from Park to Reverse, and then Drive and back to Reverse and Park, taking time to stay in each gear and give some throttle while holding the brake pedal tight. This will rock or move the engine a certain amount as they shift through the gears and apply power lightly. It will move alot more violently with broken mounts.

If you have a clunking noise on Reverse shifts, you should be able reproduce this with the hood up and pinpoint the noise and/or sight the faulty motor mount with a friend's help. Good luck, I hope this puts you on the right track to fixing this annoying noise.

Sincerely, Tater Todd

Non-California vehicles: replace every 60,000 miles

Otherwise, it is just to be inspected at 60,000 and then again at 90-95,000 miles.

I have an 03 Lexus LS430 with 64K miles. Trans is

The weakest link is on the transmission pan gasket.

You have to buy the transmission service kit.

The kit has the pan gasket and the transmission filter.

My cost is only $38........dealer is a lot more.

Use Amsoil Synthetic ATF if possible. It will help increase the service life of the transmission

Have 2007 imprezza subaru, what service is required on gear oil in transaxle.

With the trans warm, drain the oil for 1/2 hour and renew it with good quality oil. Any times a good time for renewing your trans oil.

Z3 whirring sound when transmission is engaged

It is possible that your differential could be making the sound. However, if the sound disappears when putting the trans in neutral, I would suspect that the differential should still be making noise. If the torque converter is worn, then you would have noise while in gear, but probably not as noticeable while in neutral. Depending on the production date of your car, 2000-early2001 Z3 had an issue with the torque converters.
