The E320 in that year range upto approx 2005 uses an auxiliary battery to operate the brake pump when main battery supply was lost or low. The low battery warning you describe can be caused by the aux battery being low. This battery is a small 7Ah battery mounted under the pollen filter in the engine area.

Battery Alternator Visit Workshop Warning light on 2003 Mercedes Benz E320

If your lights for the battery and alternator are on it could very well mean that either your battery is no good or that your alternator stopped charging. If it has stopped charging, you have what's left in the battery to get yourself to the repair shop before you're on the side of the road.

My 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI is showing malfunction in red with a battery displayed and saying take to workshop. Car has been parked. However, it starts ok and battery doesn't seem too low.

The auxiliary battery needs to be replaced. It's a smaller battery than the one you have in your trunk. If you take it to your dealer to have it checked out it will run around $300 to change, and on top of it they charged me $50 to diagnose the problem.

Auxillary Battery for 2005 E320... How much does it really cost and is it relatively early to be replaced?

I had a red lettering and a visit workshop msg with a battery symbol above. Mb book said for this message to check belt or alternator. Belt good so I checked in at the mb dealership thinking I had an alternator problem. When I checked in he said it was probably a secondary battery because it was in red. In blue it would be primary battery. Did not go back and check mb book but i don;t think that was in the book. anyway $345 (which i thought was very excessive) later i was out with a new? secondary battery and the light out,
