I bought this 1984 Dodge D-150 with slant 6 engine, it has been sitting since 1998..It looks as if maybe the orginal owner may habve been working on this problem when he died (not because of the truck) because the battery side half of the in-line fuse was missing..I put a new in-line fuse on and hooked it to the positive side battery terminal and it seemed fine, lights, everything working, but within a minute fo starting the truck, the fuse blew really hard?
You have a short somewhere. Disconnect the positive terminal on the battery and check for continuity with an ohms meter. Take the blown fuse out and check the same on both sides of the fuse receptor. If you hold one side to a ground and touch the other side to a positive terminal, you will get an ohms reading if there is a short. If no short, the ohms meter will do nothing.

If do you find power in both test you should take the alternator to the autoparts store to be cheked, but if any of those test fail, check you wiring harness, the

check transfer case electrical switch, sometime if it bad it will also blow the fuse. don't recommend you put any higher fuse than recommend, If the fuse blow there is a short some where and by putting higher amp fuse you might short or burn something else beside the fuse. if that check out than check your transfer case motor, might lock up and not allowing the motor to turn instead it short the fuse. don't drive the car, just leave it in park, put correct fuse amp back in and unplug transfer case electric switch and turn the key on (dont start the car) and see if the fuse blow; if not plug it back in and see if it blow the fuse. if that is not the case, unplug transfer case wire, and do the same and see if it blow the fuse.

It may be possible that your alternator is bad and discharged your brand new battery. Take both the battery and the alternator to your local parts store and have both checked.

loose wire from battery to to ignition switch somewhere,
you need to do a wiggle test of wires .
