My Volvo 2001 S60 goes into "Limp Mode" where I can't get over 2000 RPMs and the check engine light and message "Transmission Service Required" comes up. I'm getting two error codes. The first, and most frequent, is P0717 indicating a bad input speed sensor. The second code that comes up less frequently is P0700 which I believe is an error for the Transmission Control Module (TCM). My question is, does this sound like an accurate evaluation? And second, where can I find instructions for replacing the input sensor as well as the TCM. Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem on my UK 2001 S60.
It was caused by the throttle control housing gaskets not being serviced properly and consequently the entire housing had to be replaced - not a cheap job -and a valuable lesson learned - use a reputable volvo specialist to service your volvo - I didn't and I learnt the hard why! only a volvo specilaist would have known about this I went to several other main street garages & none of them could even diagnose the problem let alone fix it. Although they did do numerous other things first before they gave up - ie replaced titanium spark plugs.
Before it stoppped running altogther and went into "limp home mode" there were tell-tale engine/throttle surges when the car was idle, but in gear.
It is now running "like new" & I will never get another garage to service it, as this could have been avoided - however they can also wear out after about 10years - so my bad services just made it happen sooner!
I hope this helps!

Sounds like an oxygen sensor (there are two). I had a recent problem where I had a rough idle and my S60 continued to stall out. Turned out to be the rear oxygen sensor. After replacement, car idles nicely and car drives normally.

Hi,
These cars had a few issues with the transmissions. Sometimes upgrading the software and flushing the transmission will help, sometimes a new valve body will fix the problem, but often the transmission will need replacement due to internal failure.
The first step is to have a shop read out all the fault codes, read all the service bulletins and tech notes from Volvo regarding the transmission problems and then make a decision based on all of that information.
Good Luck,
Bret

They are correct as to the Location of the Sensor and, It would be a Time Consuming and Expensive Repair But, If you are not getting the Red Caution Light I would have the Tranny Flushed and Filled and see if it is not Just Buildup on the Sensor. It could actually Release itself. If not you will eventually have to get a Rebuild Buut, Try the Flush and Fill First.

Possible problem with the alternator not putting out enough voltage. I had the same problem with my 2002 XC70, putting in a new alternator fixed it. I used a local mechanic who I found on the car talk web-site. Low Cost Volvo parts can be purchased at FCP Groton.

I have the same car and I’m having the same trouble codes. P0700 & P0717 car surges and stalls when at a stop and kind viberates when accelerating. Did you find out the problem? And what was it?
