I would suggest replacing the blower motor resistor. When this component fails the blower will only work on one spped or none. This is a very common issue with all automotive models

take the upper radiator hose use a glove and while the car is running squeeze the hose together and see if trys to open in your hand and if it doesn't you have a weak water pump but check the condition of the drive belt and the coolant before you go to the pump

I had a 97 and the knobs broke from time to time. Dealer part.
The compressor could be low on freon and/or oil but only if there is a leak in the system which would need to be repaired at some point.
A DIY can add oil or freon with a gauge kit sold at auto parts stores if the car is 1993 or newer ( R134).

Pontiac G6 (2006) 55k miles AC inop.

Load placed on the engine takes place when the Compressor clutch engages. It will not engage if the system charge is too low on freon. It needs to be checked with a gauge, I think that may be your problem.

When they refilled the refrigerant did they put die in it to check for leaks, it sounds like there may be a leak.

2001 Hyundai Sonata 4cyl. Air conditioner worked irratically. Serpentine belt broke and was replaced. A/C started working again, then began only blowing cool air at higher speeds. Now does not blow cool...

Check the AC magnetic clutch relay, it may be sticking open. Bypass it (located under the hood) and see if the system cools down, if not you have other problems.
