My car starts tries to run. As it almost runs, the motor is slugish shaking a few seconds, then dies. I tryed to reset the, immobolizer, raido, and rekeyed the key to the door.I think I need the steps to reset it all over again. Parts I have replaced, spark plug wiresn spark plug, coils for spark plugs, i might of installed the wires on the wrong place to the spark, need to know where and witch wire gose to what spark plug.looking down through the hole where the spark plugs go with a flash light, I noticed black carbon on the pistons. Cleaned all piston. Also I changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, fule pump. No change, motor still rough shaking trys to run a few seconds at the same time, arrow on dash pointing at service engine and then dies. Can I check with a volt meter any sensors on the motor. Please help
SOURCE: ENGINE MISFIRE AND SHAKING
check your wire harness on the top of the engine. Volvo must have bought harnesses from Mercedes. The insulation just cracks and disintegrates, then the wires short. Not good for an ignition system.Once they short It can fry the circuit for that cylinder in the computer. Does not set a code other than Misfire.

you nood to check all power conition.s at the battery perhaps neg
SOURCE: engine runs ruff
you may have a valve or valves leaking which will cause it to run rough, have a leak down test done or a compression test
SOURCE: Sometimes won't start after warmed-up. Now very hard to start.
Hey Rob!
I can almost guarantee you that your problem is the infamous fuel pump relay. Open the hood and remove the fuse box cover (4 torx screws) to gain access to the relays. One of the relays is probably a green one marked 103. If so it needs to be replaced with a red, improved version.
If it's not the relay the problem is probably the pump itself.
Here's a link to some useful info on the relay and fuel pump:

You should also check for spark when the problem is present.
No spark could indicate faulty coil, camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor.
Checking a plug for spark is easy: Unscrew the plug and hold it to ground with a pair of insulated pliers or something similar while the problem is present. Have someone crank the engine while you look for spark. Should the engine start while lacking one plug it will sound horrible, but will not be harmed as long as you don't run it too long and don't rev it.
Good luck!

about the wire harness Volvo had bought from Mercedes that gose on top of motor on a S40 1.9T; was the wire that went to the coils grounded, or the ground wire tha has a diode on it. Do i take off the ground wire to the battery or leave it on.to check short to ground.from the rough ans slugish motor that dies in a few seconds. explaine how to search for that wire that is grounded on the Volvo S40
once you find a shorted wire in the wir harness on top of the motor, can you repair that wire, if so, the short will be gone that gose to the computer that tells the motor what cyclender to fire. if yes ok,if no ok please let me know befor i might have to buy one
can you but a chip for a S40 1.9T to run faster
A car either starts or it doesn't.
I do have a shorted wiring harness on my Volvo S40 2001 posted by drifwood334. But did not tel you the location of the shorted wiring harness. Been disconnecting the connectors and checking short to ground with the battery cables. I still have the short and still have more to check out. did any one find where the short is, If so, tell me so I can fix the wiring harness myself Please get back to me Thank Yoy
Just to let every one know. If you have a misfiring problem on a Volvo. Check the wiring harness for a short. take both battery cables off the battery and check with a Ohms meter both ends and to chassy ground. it should tone out or meter gose to zero. if so, you have a shorted wiring harness.
