1989 volvo not shifting into gear

Came back from vacation, start car, put into drive, car doesnt move, engine running.check trans fluid, its low, added a quart, put into gear, car shifts just fine.few hours later, under car i find pink liquid escaping, coming from tightly capped ''fluid expansion tank''. car runs fine rest of day, next morning same problem, not shifting. let car warm up a little, after while it starts shifting inexplicably, but ''coolant expansion tank overflowing out of cap all day.this continues for a couple weeks but now adding transm fluid doesnt help it change gears, pink stuff still dripping, im totally annoyed. any ideas? there dont seem to be anyother leaks under car and it was running fine until the cold weather started to kick in.

brought car used with 130,000 miles 2 months ago. Had an oil leak which I used a stop leak from NAPA which appeared to solve the problem. Changed radiator 3 days ago. Car drove EXCELLENT for 24 hours. The next day the vehicle was very difficult to accelerate and straining. stop the car and added approximately 4 quarters of motor oil. Power returned immediately! no straining. Today added another quart of oil in the morning. In the afternoon when accelerating starting hearing a sound like a fan propeller when shifting from 2 to 3. ADDED another quart of oil at 3pm today in the afternoon. Car starting giving white smoke at times. at 4 pm power to drive is very low difficult to go above 40 mph without real strain and fan propeller sound from engine. How to approach and solve this problem? MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT AND NEED LOW COST TO SOLVE. THANK YOU.

The only fluid expansion tank I know of is for the cooling system, and if that is the case you my have a leak in the transmission cooler that is built into the radiator.

2000 Nissan Altima What would make it not move forward or reverse the car starts the gear Shift moves but the car doesnt move. When put in a gear the engine idle changes as if

Transmission is either low in fluid or has gone out. Crank it up and let it warm up to operating temp then pull emergency brake and put car in neutral. Check fluid to make sure it's full and not a dark color. If it's real dark then the trans is burnt up.

Transmission

Check the fluid level.

2005 honda rincon wont move

Check transmission fluid level. If it's ok need to have trans fluid pressure checked. Need schematic, but should be a port on the side of trans for this. If to in depth then take it to a repair shop. Could just have a clogged trans filter.

1989 dodge dynasty v6, fwd, transaxle 3 speed auto, good condition, experiencing shift problem, doesnot want to shift into passing gear, sometimes it does, right now it doesn't, any takers

most auto trans don't shift into reverse when low. Reverse takes the most fluid of all the gears.
Check for a bad shift solenoid or wires to and from that circuit. Most trans-axles have them now.

2002 KIA SPECTRA 1.8 TRANS PROBLEM I, shift to drive this morning car shift fine then drop from 3-2-1- and stop no drive or reverse engine runs fine just lost all gears feels like neutral. did't...

With the motor running and the engine hood UP, stand near the driver's front wheel and look down below where you would add the brake fluid. You will see a black rubber handle. That's the dipstick for the transmission fluid. Remove the dipstick WITH THE CAR RUNNING, wipe the stick and replace it. Pull it out again and see where the fluid is on the stick. If there is no fluid on the stick you need to add at least two quarts of DEXRON III transmission fluid. It takes a special funnel and goes into the transmission where you took the dipstick out. They can help you at the parts store if you need help getting the transmission fluid back to the correct level. i have run my transmission very low many times and adding fluid always puts it back in shape.

If the fluid is okay, turn off the key and look up near the battery. Just below the air filter and battery area near the top of the transmission is a shift lever than controls the different gears that puts the transmission into gear. There's a big cable attached to it. Have someone shift through the gears with the CAR OFF and make sure you can feel that lever moving and you can see the cable pulling the lever into logical click positions. If it is shifting into the positions and you have fluid in the transmission you will need a transmisison shop to look at the car because you may have a bad electronic device that controls the transmisison or some internal transmission failure.

I have a 1997 chevy 1500. The Trans (4l60e) is bad i think

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST.
Secondly, put a line pressure gauge (or visit a local trans shop) on the pressure test port and go for a drive to verify proper line pressure. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should be around 70psi and around 140psi in R. Max line pressure should be at least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a Transgo 0.500" boost valve (easy fix in pan).
Slow, slipping or no reverse: “lo-reverse” clutches are worn out, fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit, or broken sunshell. It is possible to remedy a fluid problem by removing the checkball from its cage in the case in the rear of the trans may help (must remove valvebody), or adding a high-viscosity additive such as Lucas Transmission additive or other seal restorer product. May also have worn boost valve (can replace in the pan).
Soft shifting, gradual performance degradation: Poor line pressure rise due to leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen, failing EPC solenoid, or worst case: leaky seals throughout. Transgo HD2-C kit fixes first two without removing trans. Seal restorer may fix last problem, but probably R&R. Also try a transmission flush with BG brand products (Firestone stocks it).
No movement in any gear: pump failure, or total loss of fluid. R&R, or refill pan and find the leak. If out of fluid, avoid running the engine until the trans is refilled to avoid pump damage. To check for pump failure, check fluid level with the engine off, then start the engine and recheck fluid level. If level does not go down when engine is running, the pump is broken.
1-2 or 2-3 shift is slow/soft above part throttle: Trans is on its way out. R&R
Good luck and start with checking your transmission fluid level. Thank you for using Fixya

My 2002 Mercury Sable will not shift into gear, will shift out of park, but will not go into any gear.

How many miles and how does your transmission fluid look?

Get car ot normal oper. temps and put on level ground. Put trans thru all gears with foot on brake. Put into park, leave running and check level. If level is low, this could be part or all of your problem. If level is fine and trans fluid is not brown or burnt, you have an electronic problem.

If fluid checks ok, let me know if you have a Check engine light on, ABS light, etc.

Hope that helps.

Transmission wont respond in any drive gear

I bet you didn't get it full of fluid. CHeck the dipstick with eng. running and trans. in Park. Add fluid till it moves, but while adding, have someone shift it back and forth through all the gears with engine running. If not, you have a burnt-up transmission.

Transmission-overdrive not working properly

check the transmission fluid first .

overdrive allows the engine to run at lower RPM's , which increases the fuel
economy and also the transmission runs cooler
