The toyota RAV4 is 2005 not 1996 as first stated. Jumper cables were put on the wrong way and now a lot of electrical stuff won't work. It starts and drives but won't charge, no wipers, indicators etc. The car belongs to a friend but when I rang garage they keep talking about the ECU being blown. I presonnaly feel there is a fuse or relay somewhere that I don't see. I had a look at fuses but don't know what I'm looking for really except for a blown fuse. Can anyone direct me in the right. I feel from the way the mechanic is talking that if it has to go into him that I'll be ***** with what they'll charge. Can anyone help. Thanks
First thing you should do is to locate the Fuse Panels. They are located on the left of steering column covered possibly by a cover. Also there is a Fuse panel under the hood also covered by panel or Box Cover. The computer unit is probably not blown,Fuses are placed in vehicles for just this very type issue,to prevent Power Surges from damaging Computer units or other electrical components. Check every fuse there is a tester available that is not expensive to insure you change the blown one...thats the first place to start.
PS if you take it back to the shop DO NOT tell them you put the cables on wrong terminals,,this opens the door for the mechanic to suggest every expensive idea he may ever have.......
Thanks to everyone for all their help. problem solved. Thanks Mark also. I went through every fuse one by one inside and out and found the horn one was blown but it made no difference replacing it. I checked them all with a multi meter just incase my eyes tricked me. Checked under fuse box inside and outside the car but no main fuses there. The battery is located in a very awkard place but on the live terminal there was one connection to the battery going into a plastic box right at the terminal. After a good struggle I got this out and this is where the problem was. There terminal was split into 4 other outlets connected to the other outlets by an open fuse strip. One of these were burnt. As a temperary fix until I get the new one I stripped down a piece of copper wire and seperated some of the wire so it wouldn't be too strong and not blow in case I have a further problem. Thanks again for all the help
Glad to help......Mark

SOURCE: Half the elctrics don't work since jump starting the car.

SOURCE: Nissan will not start, battery good, fuses / links good
there is no further fuses iin this line. You didn't say why your car wouldn't start in the first place. Jump starting yours, shouldn't have affected his!
SOURCE: My 1992 Mx5 Miata just wont start!!
First off it won't turn over without pressing the clutch in. If all fuses are good and you have a good battery and you hear a click it is possible the starter or it could be the ECU. I just replaced a ECU in my 1990 miata because it only would fire the sparkplugs after releasing the ign. switch and then ALL plugs would fire at the same time.
