On most vehicles the transmission information is inbeded the VIN # or vehicle identifation number . Unfortinatly on GMC and CHEVY its not . It is stamped on the passangers side of the transmission at the rear of the oil pan just above the pan gasket you will likely have to clean it off to read it it will be a 9 digit # with letters being in it . The most common transmission for an automatic is the 4L60-E If the forth digit is D thats what it is . As far as the leak goes you need to deturman where its leaking from the pan gasket or the rear oil seal or is it comeing from in front . Transmission do not normanly leak so make sure that its not engine oil you are seeing that is being blowen back witch is much more comon . Transmission fluid is red and smells differant then engine oil and is thinner . Check the oil level on the transmission see if its red and dose it smell burnt if so it will be more black witch is vary bad . Do you have any shifting problems .Also check your engine oil to compare the 2 oils . In a nut shell its your vehicle and your the olny one that actully look at it and looking saves money and blindly replaceing parts costs a lot and rearly fixes the problem

Testimonial: "This is one of the best site I've been on. The folks here are vary helpfull. Thanks to all that helped on this problem."

SOURCE: gmc savana van will stop running while driving or start sputterin

It could be a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. Also try replacing the spark plugs and spark plug wires and having the timing checked. Good luck.

1994 GMC Vandura 2500. I cannot find the computer brain (ecm) for this van. It is not under the dash nor under the driver seat. Does anyone have any idea?

It's behind the dash on the passenger side (INSIDE the dash!). You have to pull the dash completely off to get to it . Dealers charge about $2,000 labor to do this. Cheaper solution (because the computer will crash again if it ever does once- my experience) is to bypass the computer by clipping the wires to the spark control module (under the driver's seat)and computer between the distributor and coil and hot-wiring them directly to each other. You will lose about 5 mpg, but the computer costs $2400 new....a race car driver & former GM mechanic did mine and I have never had another problem with it.

Transmission Identification

If it's a 1500 then yes the 4l60E tranny is for you. If it's a 2500-3500 you'll need a 4l80E. The 80's are only used in trucks with a gvw or 7200 and greater.
