This has been happening off and on for two years at various times. The van just dies and sometimes will start right back up and other times it won't for a while or the next day.

if you van has a security system in it, it could be causing this problem. they usually disable the starter circuit. Paul has listed good places to start. but if they don't fix it do this: when your trying to start but its not working have some one check voltage at the starter. there are 3 points to check 1: where battery cable connects 2: where starter connects to solenoid 3: small wire that operates solenoid. if there is voltage at all three point replace starter it has a shorted / open spot on armature. voltage at 1 and 3 but not 2 replace solenoid. voltage at 1 but not at 3 and you have already checked the items Paul identified check wiring between neutral safety switch and solenoid.

try changing the coil- sometimes they get hot and break down- once they cool off vehicle will start and run until they get hot again

timing chains either go out or not go out, there is no such thing as an intermittent problem with a timing chain, what about the ignition module? it is sensitive to heat, and like the crank and cam sensors can cause your kind of problem. U did not mention fuel pressure either, electric fuel pumps can stop from heat when they get near the end of there service life (100,000), this is even more common if the fuel tank is run below 1/4 tank allot, this overheats the pump in the tank because it is not covered in gas, that is how it is cooled.
SOURCE: I have a 1990 Dodge
the numbers are 12, 41, 55
12- direct batttery inut to controller disconnected within last 50 ingnition key-on cycles
41- alternator field circuit- an open or shrted condition detected in the alternator control circuit.
55- final code - indicates the end of the scan codes
I've replaced the alternator and checked all the wiring still can't find the solution. I've posted to find out if the alternator control circuit can be repaired.

My 2004 had the same issue and i replaced the transfer pump. It started right up and ran fine until the next morning i was driving it stalled. Now it won't start up not even with starting fluid.
