The radio, air, windows and lights work. we changed the starter out and he even tried to jump start it and it won't stay cranked.
Sometimes the problem has been the ignition switch power to starter. If you have checked that, then:
This procedure usually works:
·Check the battery cable connections:
Make sure the negative cable makes a good ground connection at the battery and (preferably) at the engine. Make sure the positive cable, makes a good connection at the battery and at the starter.
·Check the battery the simple way, like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
·Check the starter and solenoid:
If the wiring looks ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter(10 volts minimum while cranking).
If the starter spins and no crank, the problem is most likely the Solenoid's pinion gear is stuck.
Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck pinion gear.
·Make a simple test of the alternator:
If you can, somehow get the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery. It should be at least 13.6 volts to properly charge the battery.
Go under the car and see if you have 12 volts at the purple wire to the starter solenoid when the key is held to crank position, the wire may be broken or the starter solenoid is defective.

sounds like a bad battery or bad alternator.its going to be one of the two...have both checked

SOURCE: try to start car and nothing happens. replaced
Do the dash lights come on ? They should come on when the key is turned to the on position. If nothing happens check the engine relay. It is not too expensive to replace if you really want to eliminate that as the problem. Check all wires going to the starter and make sure it is wired correctly.
SOURCE: car will not start
Could be security if changed out your battery. Look in your owners manual for resetting the passlock II.
SOURCE: car tries to start but doesnt, it just spits & sputters
I had the same problem all of these models do, but GM wont recall them. Here is what you do if you have not yet, turn to key to on but don't start the engine all the lights in the dash will go on, when they turn back off see if your security light stays on or blinks. If it does its your Pass Lock security system. You can reprogram it using the key, take the key out then put it back in the ignition move it all the way to ON but don't turn on the engine when the lights in the dash go out turn the key back to the ACC position leave it there for ten minutes the light should turn off after about ten min. then turn the key to the OFF position pull it out about 1/4 of the way then push it in and start it up. If this is the problem you may have to do this any time it does not start up.
First thing to check is turn
your key on and look for a amber light that say check engine. Make sure that
light come on and go out after about 3 to 15 sec with the key in on position. If
you don't have the light on the most likely your car computer do not get power
recheck the fuses and fusible link.
If you have the light on then
listen to the fuel pump running when you turn the car on, it should run for
about 3 sec. and turn off. If you don't hear the sound of the fuel pump then it
would be your fuel pump or relay. obd2 scanner tool
