Under the panel there are 3 light sockets for tail light, backup light and turn signal. there is no access to the brake light. access is under sheet metal. is this a dealer only repair? Does the whole taillight assy need to be replaced? Should this be covered by the Toyota extended warranty?
Th other post is incorrect, the 2004 has LED brake lights that are part of the tail light assembly. you have to replace the whole assy. There are two screws that hold the assy in, they are both covered by white cable clips. The clips just pull off and then you can use a 10mm wrench to remove the nuts on the screws. My brake light stopped working and during the removal, the LEDs started working again, hopefully you will find the same situation as the LEDs are supposed to last for years.
I just had same problem with my LEFT brake light, and also was told the entire assembly has to ordered and replaced -- at a cost of $181. I guess we'll see if the removal process gets mine going again, or if the replacement unit is necessary. I do think it's a little rediculous to require such an expensive repair for what is essentially a faulty brake lamp on most vehicles.

I have the same problem with my brake light its not the brake light but the led computer board at the bottem of tail light assembaly unfortonitly toyota dose not sell that led control board and makes you buy the hole houseing $210 for what is probaly a $ 20 control board
One of the bulbs doubles as the brake bulb.It is the one with two elements in it.Toyota extended wont cover bulbs.

Replacing tail/brake/turn signal/backup lamp bulbs (page 59-60 of owners manual)
Sedan
The tail lamp, brake lamp, turn
signal lamp and backup lamp bulbs
are located in the same portion of
the tail lamp assembly. Follow the
same steps to replace either bulb.
1. Make sure headlamp switch is in
OFF position and open trunk and
remove two plastic mushroom nuts,
three push pins and the plastic
cover from inside the trunk to
access the lamp assembly.
2. Carefully pull the carpet away to
expose the lamp assembly hardware.
3. Remove four nut and washer
assemblies and the lamp assembly
from the vehicle.
4. Remove the bulb socket by
rotating it counterclockwise, then
pulling it out of the lamp assembly.
5. Pull the bulb from the socket and
push in the new bulb.
6. Install the bulb socket into the lamp assembly by rotating it clockwise.
7. Install the lamp assembly on the vehicle with four nut and washer
assemblies ensuring the washers on the nuts are flush with the body to
prevent water from entering the trunk.
8. Carefully push the carpet back in to place and install the plastic cover
inside the trunk with three push pins and two plastic mushroom nuts.
Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (coupe)
1. Make sure the headlamp control
is in the OFF position and then
open the hatchback.
2. From inside the luggage
compartment remove the wing nut
of the rear light assembly cover.
3. Using a Phillips screw driver
remove the screw. The lamp is still
retained by a spring loaded clip.
Remove by gently pulling out the
light housing.
4. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise as far as possible and pull it
out.
5. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
Install in reverse order.
Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (sedan)

nuts of the light housing.
3. Gently pull the light housing to
the outside.
4. Turn the bulb socket
counterclockwise and pull it out.
5. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
Install in reverse order.
Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (wagon)
1. Make sure the headlamp control
is in the OFF position and then
open the hatchback.
2. Using a screw driver remove the
fixings and trim from the body.
3. Remove the socket from the lamp
assembly
4. Pull the bulb straight out of the
socket.

Hope this helps.
