On about 6 occasions over the past couple weeks my sunroof has opened by itself. On each occasion it has happened after backing up and then putting it in drive. When it happens I try to stop it by pressing the close button but it doesn't do anything. It fully opens all the way and stops. After about 20-30 seconds I can close it. Not something I want to happen after backing out of a parking spot during a rain storm.
As a florida resident for over 30 yrs and a mechanic I'm Not a big fan of sunroofs I'm a convertible man. a sunroof can be a real problem and costly to repair. may I suggest pulling the fuse and not using the this feature as they are prone to leaking. this situation sounds dangerous and should be off line until a solution is found.

It sounds like it just needs to be reinitialized. Turn your key to the on position with motor off and hold the up/full vent button down for at least 30 seconds or until your sunroof either clicks or goes to the full vent position. That should fix your problem.

The motor is in the front area of the roof unit.If you can drop the switch and trim around the front of sunroof unit and headliner ,you can can access the sunroof drive motor. The drive shaft of the motor can be turned mannually with an allen wrench which will assist in closing and identifying the problem area.If its hung very badly ...remove the sunroof motor then push the roof closed.

in some cases you r able to relearn the position of the sunroof with the use of a scan tool that all GM dealers have. I advise you to seek a professional to repair this for you.
The scan tool is the key here.

if the sunroof makes no attempt to open, and the dome light does not dim when you press the switch, chances are the switch is defective. If the motor is bad, or the roof jammed you should see the dome light dim and blink when you attempt to open it.
