2004 Lincoln LS -- running rough at 50+mph when accelerate-- dtc indicates coil problem-- how to tell which one?

bikerflapper again-- first code was P0351--ignition coil bad-- I searched it out and found that was refering to cyl.#1. Since the intake had to come off to replace that one,I replaced all 3 on that side while it was torn apart. Lit it back off and now the same symtoms reappeared and I get a P0316, P0306, P0351' P0354. I am beginning to think the PCM is wacko.

bikerflapper again-- I also replaced all plugs at the same time-- car has 90000 miles. checked for vacumn leaks-- none found, intake sealed good. I am thinking the PCM may be bad although the dealer replaced it 4 months ago with the same symptoms. Thanks for the help

i have a 2003 LS and it shifts seemingly on its own most of the time. the only time it runs right is when i'm doing over 70 mph but getting up to 70 is sometimes a task. i feel lots of hesitance and then this horrible smell....i'm thinking its the ignition coil. does anyone know about how much that normally costs to get fixed?

I went thru this on my 2002 LS as well.
I replaced one ignition coil at the dealer - only to get the same misfire code on another cylinder. After a little research found out is actuall a gasket/o-ring problem design of the block. Spark plugs are deep in the block - under the oil - which is why they are supposed to last 100,000 miles. But the o-rings start to leak some where between 65k-85k miles. Coils go bad because of oil contamination. If you don't solve leaking oil problem will have to replace coils again - but sooner - because leaking oil will be progressively worse.
Cost - 8 ignition coils
set of spark plugs (who knew they were that expensive
and a ton of cash for the labor to tear down the top of the motor

Bikerflapper again: thanks warlock. I took it to the dealer tonight. The PCM is still under warranty and I think it may have a problem. I will post the results when I get it back

Does it still run rough? These do have a tendency to damage the drivers in the PCM.

2004 Lincoln LS misfire P0355 Ignition coil E

I have the same car, I bought new

You don't need a shop to work on that issue

You go to Rock Auto.Com & buy about 6 Wells
COP Ignition Coils for about $50 verse $70 at parts store

You only need a 7mm socket to remove the coil covers &
one screw holding any coil you wish to change

I realize you don't have professional tools as I do,or all the
experience with the LS coil issues

I have replaced coils based on a code, which should be PO 301 thru
PO308, not the 355 & letter stuff, although there the same thing, just not
on an LS

I have used scan tool software in Mode #06 to find bad coils

The third & most time consuming way, is what you do & I have had
to do also & the reason the dealers & shops can't resolve the issues
at times

You start with a new coil in the cyl with the PO Code

If you get codes again or many codes & you will, you replace the old
coil & walk the new one to another cyl

Why--because a really bad coil will act up whenever it wants to,once
ever 3 weeks,2 weeks,at every stop light one day & then gone for weeks

I have seen people on this site spend up to $2500 at a dealer with no fix,
when one 50 dollar coil & half hour of your time was the fix

A bad coil will put you into ETC Failsafe & you can't go over 6 mph, that
is the way the system is designed

Better yet- for another $1200 a dealer installs a new throttle body for
no reason ,other than they don't understand the very product they sell
& service

At about 55 to 65 mph 1500 to 2000 rpm truck hesitates slight exceleration

I would go with bad COP Ignition Coils

More likely you have several bad all at once

Common problem with ford & lincoln cop coils

No you don't need any codes for that to happen
& the PO 300 codes on those are not always correct.

I have had the fuel gauge code also in my Lincoln Ls &
lots of others.

Just work on the coils & disregard all codes

Not the tps, not the gas pedal, not the tacm on throttle
body.

I have seem a bad battery do some odd things

My 2000 lincoln ls feels like it has a misfire while idling @ stops. excelerates fine until it hits between 40- 50 mph. then has same feeling of the misfire or low power. then once it reaches over 50 mph...

Buy one new coil from auto parts store $59.00

Walk it one cylinder at a time

Why would you swap coils, obviously one
of them is bad.

The one you took out of #5,find it ,and put in the
new one there.

I would put in new OEM Plugs.
They are a special tip just for the LS
at least on ones newer than yours
They are NGK even though they have motorcraft
on the ceramic shell.

Clean the throttle plate and MAF with the two
CRC products for that

I wouldn't rule out a bad EGR Valve as another issue,
though not related to the misfire issue

Vehicle hesitates when during acceleration runs 2005 lincon ls

Got a Check Light on dash?
Got any stored codes?

Most likely you have a COP Ignition Coil going bad.
Have the TPS Sensor checked also. I would prefer a scope trace, to a voltage reading

You can expect at least one part failure a year on the LS I have a 2004.

Got codes--give them to me,I'll help you out.

I have a lincoln ls v6 2004 the check engine light is on and the and the shifting seems rough

take it to Autozone or one of the other auto part places and they can tell you. From my own expreriance it would be the ignition coil and there is one for each cylinder.

Transmission "slips" when downshifting, especially going up slight incline and accelerating. Also, engine "misfire" idiot light came on once. Turned off engine, restarted, problem gone. What should I...

Lincoln LS's are good for the ignition coils going bad. This mimics a transmission issue trying to accelerate going uphill. Take your car to a LINCOLN dealer and have them do a stress test on the coil pack. It will tell them which one is bad. Also if your car is a 3.9 V8 and was built in the Wixom plant (you can tell by the VIN) google it. All of your coil packs and gaskets are covered for 10 yrs or 100,000 miles whichever comes first. It is listed in the TSB's

2003 Lincoln LS check engine light

I had the same problem with a 2004 LS. I took it to the dealer and turned out that 6 ignition coils were out and was factory defect. Ford extended the warranty for the ignition coil. All work and parts "no charge" this service was done about a month ago

2002 Lincoln Ls sputters at about 40-50 MPH

first thing is the engine light on?
these cars had problems with the on plug ign coils and if this is a misfire the comp will tell you which cyl is the problem.
