He ignition switch generally has four positions: off, accessories, on, and start. Some cars have two off positions, off and lock; one turns off the car, and the other allows the key to be removed from the ignition. When the key is turned to the accessories position, certain accessories, such as the radio, are powered; however, accessories that use too much battery power, such as window motors, remain off in order to prevent the car's battery from being drained. The accessories position uses the least amount of battery power when the engine is not running, which is why drive-in movie theaters recommend that the car be left in theaccessories mode during the movie.

The on position turns on all of the car's systems, including systems such as the fuel pump, because this is the position the ignition switch remains in while the car's engine is running. The start position is spring loaded so that the ignition switch will not remain there when the key is released. When the key is inserted into the ignition switch lock cylinder and turned to the start position, the starter engages; when the key is released, it returns to the on position, cutting power to the starter. This is because the engine runs at speeds that the starter cannot match, meaning that the starter gear must be retracted once the engine is running on its own.

Either the ignition switch or the lock cylinder may fail in a car, but both circumstances have very different symptoms. When the ignition switch fails, generally the electrical wiring or the plastic housing develops problems. The car may not turn on and/or start when this happens. Also, the spring-loaded start position could malfunction, in which case the starter will not engage unless the key is manually turned back to the on position.

When the lock cylinder malfunctions, however, the operation of the key itself will become problematic. If the tumblers become stripped, the lock cylinder may be able to turn with any key, or you may be able to remove the key when the car is on. If the tumblers begin to shift, the lock cylinder may not turn. Sometimes the key can be wiggled until the lock cylinder turns, but it is important to remember that this is only a temporary fix.

Replacing an ignition switch can be tricky business, particularly in newer cars, because of the anti-theft devices used in cars. Once the ignition switch is separated from the back of the lock cylinder, the car can be started with a screwdriver, making it vital that this switch be difficult to get to. It is important to consult a shop manual before attempting this kind of repair, as the anti-theft devices may require special tools; attempting to remove an ignition switch without the proper tools can render the car inoperable.

You can jump across the celonoid on the starter. If the engine turns over then your problem is either the celonoid or the starter switch.

If everything is turning on, and there's power... check for 12V at the alternator. it may be out now.... or a connector came loose, or wire broke.

SOURCE: when i turn the key I get no dash lights, 97 blazer

I had the same exact thing happen to me, I have a 97 blazer and after hours of screwing around with it and several different options... it turned out to simply be the ignition switch.

Testimonial: "Cheers really appreciated that the second opinion was very helpful, mine also just turned out to be just the ignition switch. SO what will be next ???"

Ignition problem, turn key but nothing happens?

First thing to do is look at the dash lights when you put the switch in START position. If they blink or dim, you may have a faulty battery or poor connectivity.
Next try jumping the starter. You'll find a starter jumper at almost any auto parts. If you get no result then the problem is with the starter, If the starter turns then the problem is in the starting circuit from the switch to the starter relay.

The car is starting 1/10.. Firts i turn ignition key and the light in the dash are lighting up good,i turn the key and nothing happen.I take the off the ignition and it make a tic-tic-tic on the...

We have to assume the battery is usable, if not, anything else doesn't help. A couple of possibilities- First, get a simple, cheap device that uses a 9V battery and the car's cigarette lighter to prevent losing anti-theft codes. Once this is plugged in, remove the negative battery cable first, then the positive. CLEAN the battery connectors and terminals. Try to start the engine. If it still does the same thing, remove the negative battery cable again and follow it to its next connection and clean that point. While it is off, remove the other end of the positive cable which goes to the starter terminal and clean both points.
While under the hood, look for the cable connecting the engine block to the body of the car and clean both ends of that cable.
If the problem is still there, it can be related to one of these; the ignition switch, the starter solenoid or a corroded fuse connection. The starter is not protected by a fuse but the solenoid may be.
Good luck-

I bought a Chevy Trailblazer, used, had keyless remote access Viper Alarm after manufacturer. Had trouble with transmission and alarm....took to Chevy dealer they replaced transmission. Now the remote...

You need to find the black push button called the valet button. That is the overide. Get in the car turn the key to IGN as the alarm is going off and then you have either 5 or 10 seconds to push that button once and then 2-5 seconds later the alarm is shut off. To put the car into valet mode which means no alarm at all you put the key to IGN push that button once then pull key out at which point the blue light should turn solid blue.

Or option two is you open a door and hit the lock, then unlock, then lock button again on the remote and the blue led will be solid which means no crazy alarm.

Key won't come out of ignition - won't turn completely off

Ignition switch (where key actually goes in) needs replaced. May be easier to get the whole column because that's not gonna be very simple. Also for the problem of getting nothing when you turn the key all the way over, that is the contacts within the box of the switch down the harness on the column. Not an impossible fix though. Contacts usually get burnt and give you dead spot once in awhile, will get worse, believe me.
