My car will not go into gear unless its started and already in gear. Ill pull it outta gear and won't go back in while running.

Is it an auto or manual? do you hear grinding? does the car try and take off on you or creep when you start it in gear?

Your transaxle will have to come out & new parts installed,
like synchro rings

You should be able to push in the clutch & shift thru all
gears nice & smooth, with no engine running.

That said I wouldn't rule out clutch issues also, but not
for the shifting issues.

what are the synchro rings, and what do they look like? Thank you so much,

  • Anonymous Feb 10, 2013

Synchros are brass rings next to each gear cluster to synchronize the engagement into the next gear They wear out especially if you abuse a trans when shifting They are ina manual not auto trans The trans has to come out to replace any parts

  • Anonymous Feb 10, 2013

Google trans syncro rings Should be pictures & lots to learn

Is there any way to make sure they are the problem? I don't really have the money to take it in, so I usually do it myself. But this is a bit more than I've done before. You are going to be tired of me before it's all said and done. Again, thank you

You have a transaxle. Any work on one of them is strictly a trans shop repair No way you could even attempt that It also os a very expensive repair costing more than your car is worth if that will help you make a decision

I didn't think anyone would take the time to answer this back so I didn't put much thought into the way I explained the problem , but I feel like I should explain exactly what went on. I hope it's ok.

It will probably be way to much unimportant ramble but here I go. about 9 months ago, i went to pull out of a friends driveway and onto a really busy road ( on a corner too. ) I'm turning left so I was still in the oncoming lane and go to shift into 2cd and It was hard to get out of 1st. So instant panic mode, tried all gears finally getting it into 3rd.I drove in 3rd 2 miles home. (This next part don't matter I'm sure but I am blaming my boyfriend, so I'm throwing it in!) I don't drive my car more than a 20 miles a day and have had it about 3 1/2 years. But the last 18 or more months, My boyfriend would drive it approx. 200 miles. everyday. (his truck gets bad gas mileage? Now that I got that off my chest, I had no problem letting it sit there and rest for a week saying the clutch went out. I should mention Since I bouight it over 4 years ago, I would hear a little whistling noise until I put even just a little pressure on the clutch pedal. ( I assumed it was a throw out bearing) I don't remember hearing that the last few months. Anyway , after letting it sit that week, It popped into my head, how could I not think to check the fluid. A friend of mine was here, checking it and it was empty so he put fluid that was behind his seat. which I was told you are supposed to use fresh and wipe the lid each time you check it. But it was fixed for about 6 m. We were at Walmart and it wouldn't go into reverse so I bought fluid and opened the cap up on what I thought this whole time was the refill for the clutch so I filled it and it made it home. I kept checking and filling it up . Then it started hard shifting but I usually can always get it in 3rd. I read and read on lime and in my books what could be a quick fix, over a mo. ago started trying to bleed it myself and make my 11year old push in the clutch for me . I was doing it kind of right I thought and kept checking the fluid and it wasn't loosing any it was still filled all the way to the top but I would get a lot out of everytime I opened the slave cyl. bleeder valve. In the past my friend would bleed it and it helped but now that I was doing it, It was now getting worse, I drove it about 20 miles to and from my parents house several times in 3rd. Or if there was a cop by the stop sign or to get it in reverse I shut my car off to shift into the gear and back off and change the gear and back on . Sometimes after it would get worm that it would shift easy. Come to find out it was the master cyl. I was checking so I finally checked the 1 in the corner with no writing on it and iot was bone dry. And the plastic looked dirty. I put fluid in it, my dad blead it and it was good 4 a few days . then it started getting bad, I would start my car and it would lung forward or back I kept looking for leeks or problems under the hood and I seen that there was a little black rubber washer (or something) that was on loosely this thing that moved everytime my daughter shifted to a gear. I will now let you take all of this in and let you ponder why you told me to explain away.

Sounds like you need to replace the entire master clutch slave cylinder assy & possibly the throw bearing if it is somehow part of the complete assy for the clutch to work correctly

SOURCE: Car will start but won't stay running

Does it get enough gas? Try adjusting the gas lever under the hood.
NOTE: Adjusting this to the optimum is a tough task. Consider asking a professional.

SOURCE: Just replaced the battery, now the car won't

You most likely have an aftermarket fob and remote start unit. What is the brand on the back of your key fob?You will have to get the proper reset and registration procedures for the particular unit installed in your car to make your key work normally.

1979 dodge truck not pulling any fuel. Already replaced fuel pump and still won't start unless u put fuel in the carb.

remove the lift pump and make sure its not on the back of the cam ,it will never work like this ,then remove the pipe from the carb end and try putting some fuel down it to prime and wet the valves inside the pump ,if that doesnt work check for a porous pipe froim the tank to the metal pipe that runs to the pump ,if that doesnt work then look inside the tank ?

Car won't start but makes a grinding noise like when the car is started already

This sounds like a damaged starter drive gear and engine flywheel gear.

Coming to stop sign by putting break gear slips then return to park move to drive runs. second as i drive in curves slips but as give gas enough continues running.

Just to make sure I got this right. If you come to a stop, the car won't pull again unless you put it in park? Then, if you start into a curve, the transmission starts to slip unless you give it more gas? This could be signs of a bad torque converter, failing fluid pump (not as likely), or burnt/low transmission fluid level. Check the transmission fluid after the vehicle has been driven (warm engine), leave it running, and on a level surface. Check the level twice and take the lowest reading.

Truck won't start unless I pull the shift lever up and towards me until I find just the right spot.

Try checking/replacing the neutral safety switch. This switch prevents the vehicle from starting when the transmission is in gear

How do I know that I need the timing chain fixed?

either your car won't start, or if it does it will backfire and sputter. Then check your timing when the timing mark gets dead center on the flywheel, your number one piston should be at the top of its stroke, you can pull the plugs and check this with a pencil inserted in the spark plug hole!
