My 98 chevy 4x4 with the 5.7 wants to shift at 5000 rpms and will do it for three gears then shift fine in forth but one or two lights later it only shifts 3gears and two more lights only 2nd gear with a once in a while 3rd but all at 5000 rpms.. is it the filter or electric problemor both..

AS YOUR CAR IS VERY OLD. THE ENGINE PARTS MUST BE VERY OLD. IN THIS SITUATION EVERY CAR DOSENT WORKS PROPER WHEN THE ENGINE BECOMES HOT. YOU JUST NEED TO CHECK AT CHEVY SERVICE CENTER FOR A BETTER SOLUTION. THEY WILL HELP U BETTER AFTER CHECKING YOUR CAR PERSONALLY.

Hi:

Your transmission has 3 shift rails...
1st - 2nd
3rd -4th
5th- Reverse

If your 3rd gear doesn't work , you have an internal transmission problem, such as a syncronizer, or similar fail... There is not much you can fix, without removeing the transmission.

Drop the pan, odds are the shift solenoid is out, its located at the front of the trans on the driver side. I'm sure your check engine light is on that will comment about the timing/shift solenoid being bad. I had the same problem with mine. The solenoid had plastic coming out of the inside. To remove it you'll find a small C clip holding it in, just take a small screw driver and pull the clip out. The part cost me like $36 from my local dealership. And its a longer solenoid. I believe its the 3-2 downshift solenoid. I do have the part number if you need it.
