Instructions

  1. Remove the Upper Control Arm
    • 1Disconnect the ground battery cable using a wrench.
    • Loosen the front wheel lugs located on the same side of the upper ball joint you need to replace. Use a lug wrench.
    • Raise that same front wheel off the ground using a floor jack and support the vehicle on a jack stand.
    • Finish removing the tire.
    • Take the cotter pin off the upper ball joint stud holding the steering knuckle arm. Use a pair of nose pliers.
    • Remove the castle nut from the upper ball joint stud using a wrench or ratchet, ratchet extension and deep socket.
    • Loosen the two bolts securing the back of the upper control arm to the mounting bracket. Use a wrench to hold the bolt head as you loosen the retaining nut with a ratchet and socket.
    • Pull the control-arm ball joint off the steering knuckle arm. You may need to use a Pitman arm puller to free the ball joint.
    • Finish removing the two bolts from the back of the upper control arm and lift the upper control arm off the vehicle.
Install the New Upper Control Arm
    • Set the new upper control arm in place and install the two bolts and retaining nuts to secure the back of the upper control arm to the mounting bracket. Remember the bolt heads should point inward toward the shock absorber with the retaining nuts on the outside of the mounting bracket. Do not tighten the bolts yet.
    • 11Insert the control-arm ball joint on the steering knuckle arm and start the castle nut with your hand over the ball joint stud. Do not tighten the nut yet.
    • Tighten the two bolts on the mounting bracket to 67-foot lbs. (91 Nm) using a torque wrench. Hold the bolts with a backup wrench as you tighten the retaining nuts with the torque wrench.
    • Tighten the ball-joint castle nut to 45-foot lbs. (61 Nm) using the torque wrench, ratchet extension and deep socket.
    • Install a new cotter pin through the joint-ball stud hole using the nose pliers. If necessary, tighten the castle nut just a few degrees to clear the stud hole through one of the castle nut slots.
    • Mount the tire on the wheel assembly and install the wheel lugs using the lug wrench.
    • Lower the vehicle and finish tightening the wheel lugs.

SOURCE: 2002 dodge stratus 2.4L dohc water pump and timing instructions

This procedure is wayyyy to long to list on here. Your better off going to your local auto parts store and buying a repair manual for your car. It will have both detailed procedures for fixing both of your items. You can also goto the library and get the factory service manual for free. Good luck to you and thanks for using fixya!

Sincerely,

jC

SOURCE: Upper and lower ball joint replacement

to remove the axles, remove brake caliper and disc, remove hub assembly, the center hub/axle nut and...(there are i think 3-4 bolts on the back side of the spindle to remove the hub), you may have to force the hub off the spindle with a hammer or air hammer... once the hub is out the axle should slide out of the front differential allowing access to the ball joint nuts for removal...

SOURCE: replacing serpentine belt 2002 dodge stratus

Did this on my 2002 Stratus 2.4L. I agree with other poster, you do have to remove the passenger tire and wheel wall to do it, but the tensioner travels clockwise.
Note: I offer this solely as a description of how I accomplished the task on my vehicle. It should not be taken as me advising anyone else in any way on how or whether they manage to repair their own vehicles.

1) Engaged parking brake, loosened lugs on passenger front tire.
2) Jacked-up and placed jack-stand.
3) Removed piece of black under-carriage which surrounds the oil filter and attaches to front bumper. There are at least 10 plastic push-pins to remove and I managed to destroy half of them in the process.
4) Positoned belt over lower pulleys and tensioner (as best as possible) then used a bungee to hold the top end of belt up while I worked under the car.
5) Used a 3/8 ratchet and inserted into square hole attached to the tensioner, disengaged the tensioner (moves clockwise) then used a brace to keep the ratchet handle in that position.
6) From top, removed bungee and finished placing belt over alternator, checked the position of entire belt, reengaged the tensioner, and replaced wall and wheel.

My rear tires are leaning in on my 2002 dodge stratus and I just replaced the rear struts and mounting plates

rear camber and toe is adjustable on your car; but first make sure that all bushings are intact, especially on the upper control arm, and that the ball joints are good. look for bent parts, although if you haven't been in an accident you probably don't have to worry about that.

Repair CV Joint/transaxle on 2002 Dodge Stratus

you don't have to remove the lower ball joint or even loosen it. Just pop the tie rod off and take out the two strut bolts but be easy it don't jump out and stab the boot, it can come out that way because if you have one in my case the lower control arm ain't coming out very easy.

Removing Ball joints

You'll need the repair manual for this. There are upper and
lower ball joints front and rear. You also have to deal with
a number of suspension components to access the ball
joints. Lower ball joints can be replaced by pressing old
out and new in using a large socket to match circumference
of the ball joint.
