2003 envoy smells like fumes and idles rough

My 2003 Envoy XL is idling rough. Once I start going everything is smooth. The check engine light is on, I took to auto zone and it said multiple misfires. In the last two days I have fixed a exhaust leak that was caused by a manifold bolt missing, all new plugs and wires, new air flow sensor, new MAP sensor, cleaned the throttle body, and replaced the throttle body pedal sensor. I am out of ideas on what would be going on. You can smell fumes when reving the engine, and the rocks by the tailpipe are black.

Why does my2004 gmc envoy xl slt idle high at startup?

This is normal. All vehicles idle high at start up to get the engine to operating temperature. This is known as open loop. The computer ignores signals from O2 sensors to keep your engine running safely. Once it has warmed up, it will enter closed loop, and you will see a decrease in idle.

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy XL. I replaced the battery yesterday and when I started the car, the engine had a VERY rough idle, died a couple of times and then the SES light came on. I was told to drive the car...

When you disconnected the battery, the PCM (power control module) was reset to factory default. You can try driving it with several engine on/engine off cycles. Get it up to 50 mph each time so the computer can recognize the transmission operation also. Hope this helps.

My 2003 GMC Envoy XL's check engine light is on and idles rough. I suspect an O2 sensor and was wondering if a person can buy an analyzer to heck it themselves instead of paying a mechanic? Richard

You can take your vehicle to a place like Auto Zone, they can read the fault code with scanner, or you can buy a OBD II scanner for anywhere between $50 to $100. Interpreting the codes may require some knowledge of the car though.

2004 Envoy xl stalls when making turns

this is caused by slow engine idle speed, do the procedure below.
Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Rough idle only when engine is cold

check to see if the vehicle has EGR valve most of them are either elecrtronic or vacum controlled disconnect it and start it check and see if this smoothes out cause it sounds like the valve is staying open while the engine is cold if thsi solves the problem replace the valve.

secondly take a small screw driver aor a tiny hammer and tap the valve while the engine is running if it smoothes out replace the valve the valve is carbon filled and needs to be changed .
