BATTERY DRAIN 2005 Kia Amanti - battery drains overnight. Has a draw somewhere in the heater controls or dash info system. Can't narrow it down. It does not do it every day. Sometimes it's ok for a week and sometimes it will drain everyday even though it's driven daily. Replaced battery. Alternator ok. It just has a drain. You can watch the voltmeter drop slowly. Any ideas? Andy

If you haven't heard this yet you can pull the negative cable off the battery when it will sit a while. It will not drain the battery if negative cable is off the battery.

Could be. The three most things I replace for power draws are the alternator, starter, and the radio. Fourth things are the light switch and ignition switch. There are many other things that can drain a battery. Get it on a scanner and have it diagnosed. It will cost. But it is cheaper than pay a thousand dollars for the aboved mentioned.

Allfordmustangs.com has an article if you Web search your car with fuse 27 and 32 as part of the search. It blames the GEM as part of the problem(wiper) and also points out that the radio has several power feeds. Fuse 27 is hot all the time, but fuse 32 is only hot in ACC or Run. So as long as you can test fuse 32 to be hot in only Acc or Run, it should not drain the battery in Off position. You might want to test the ignition switch to verify it is really turned off.

The all mustangs article had different symptoms, as you did not indicate whether the fuses popped.

The wiper motor is suppose to derail and turn off. If you can unplug the wiper motor overnight and the battery stays up, you would know that it is either the wiper motor or wiper control. The radio is on the other fuse circuit. But whether the radio can drain a battery in a short time, you need to measure draw, but if the fuse pops, the battery should stay up. Again, disconnecting a circuit like a radio, and then having the battery stay up, would point to the radio circuit being at fault.

When you replaced battery you activated the system. Need to read owner manual and see if it tells how to deactivate it. You may need to contact dealer to deactivate it.

The alternator may charge fine but could drain the battery through a bad diode,have you checked the alt for a bad diode?Disconnect the battery positive cable.Put a regular 12v test light between the battery positive post and the positive battery cable.If the test light is bright you do have a drain,if dim it is OK.A dim light may mean the drain is internal in the battery.If you do have a bright light remove a fuse ,one at a time from the fuse box until the light goes dim.Once dim you have identified the bad circuit.If removing all fuses do not dim the light,disconnect the alt charging wire at the alt,if that dims the light,then you do have a bad diode.DO NOT create a drain(bright light) when checking for the drain by turning on the key or opening a door/trunk etc.
Also,do an overnight battery check by disconnecting the battery overnight,if things are fine the next morning after the battery was disconnected then it is a drain in the vehicle,if the battery is dead even after being disconnected overnight,,then the battery is bad.

A 6 amp draw would be enough to drain the battery overnight. are you sure its not lower?

The easiest way to find a draw is to start removing fuses one at a time until the draw goes away making sure to replace the fuse before moving onto the next so you don't end up with a pile of fuses that you don't know where they go. Once you have narrowed down the fuse that eliminates the draw you can then start to focus on all the devices that circuit powers up.

Typically you would want to see a draw of less than .050 amps and in your situation you should see less that .030 amps or even less after the draw is gone.

Post back after your find out what fuse eliminates the draw and I'll do my best to get you some more info on that circuit.

Two things I can think of. First is the heater core could be leaking, you might smell a sweet smell due to the atifreeze in your radiator. The other is a cloged drain for the A/C. Usally there is a small rubber pipe curved up then facing down on the fire wall of your car. If that is pluged then the water or condinsation in the system has no were to go but in your car.

have the the battery checked to see if its good. Could be just a bad battery.. Also have the alternator checked.
